Recommendation RequestWomen novelists from around the world?
Posted June 11, 2022 by Understanderson in FeministBooks

Hi--I'm new here, so apologies if someone has already posted this question. I'm looking for good novels by women authors from various parts of the world. I'm particularly interested in authors from African countries, but would love to hear recommendations from any country. Unfortunately, I am limited to English and French in terms of what I can read.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I recommend Amelie Nothomb - she is Belgian. I recently read Petronille, and will be reading some more, as I really enjoyed it. I think most of her novels are in translation (originally in French). There are lots of them - she publishes short novels, and frequently.

I highly recommend Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie! She’s a brilliant Nigerian author whose third novel, Americanah, is one of my favorites. It’s about an African immigrant woman in the U.S., and as an immigrant myself, it resonated a lot.

Thanks! I just put a hold on this at the library. I've actually meant to read her for years and hadn't gotten around to it.

Seconded! Butler is a favorite.

I love her! Have read everything she wrote--one of the most original sci fi minds ever.

I recently read The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives, by Nigerian author Lola Shoneyin, and I really liked it.

This looks interesting! Thanks!
