Recommendation RequestCan anyone recommend me which Adichie book to read first?
Posted February 5, 2024 by dragonheart in FeministBooks

I've seen her feminist work is highly regarded - and as a bonus, she also refuses to parrot the TWAW line so that's extra incentive to support her - but I'm not sure where to start. Is there anyone here who is familiar with her work and who can give me a recommendation?

I've started with 'Americanah' and loved it. On paper I haven't much in common with the protagonists, yet I found them very relatable, they are real, complex, interesting. She captures the contradictions of any expat (how you carry your culture of origin with yourself when you live abroad, you see things differently than the natives, but you're also shaped by your new country, you are not the same you were before, emigrating gives you new eyes with which to look at your own culture). Plus her writing style is so good, she's very skillful in expressing complex emotions with simple and elegant words.

I then tried 'Half of a yellow sun'. It's very different in genre and themes. Much darker, as it's set in the sixties during the Biafran war, so you can imagine that it's really impactful. As expected, this one also is beautifully written, if you are in a mental state where you can handle reading harsh historic events I highly recommend it (of course the protagonists are fictional, but they are so well characterised they could be real).

After reading my second novel written by her and liking it so much as well, even though they are so different, I've realised that it's not a coincidence, I simply like her as an author and I've decided to read all her other novels. This is to say that I'm not sure what to recommend first because the result would have been the same for me if the order were reversed. Maybe read the synopsis and choose the one you're more inspired by.

I'm always impressed by people who can describe books without giving the plot away. Thanks.

I have read her small book "We should all be feminists" which is a modified version of her TED talk. I think it is a good introduction into her overall feminist thinking. I like her a lot but so far haven't read any other book by her.

I loved Purple Hibiscus. An excellent book, I recommend it to everyone!

I really liked Americanah. It was a good exploration on what it is to be an immigrant - including how other people's behaviour and perceptions are beyond our control.

But all her books are amazing, so it's safe to pick one that sounds most interesting to you.

I learned a lot. I didn't actually know about Biafra before
