I was really enjoying the audiobook of this essay by a french feminist for a few minutes at least, then I got to this line: “cis men who have been socialized as such”. What does this even mean? Are “transwomen” not socialized as men and hence suffer from “dysphoria” due to their male socialization? Maybe that’s too simplistic an explanation but I imagine if “transwomen” were socialized as female it would end up like the classic horror movie, Sleep Away Camp. Even if TIMs aren’t socialized male, they still are male so why is socialization the thing that places them into a special category different from the men that it’s acceptable to hate? Has anyone else read or listened to this essay? What are your thoughts?
I found it… tame?
That disappointed me.
I have quoted it to make a point that misandry and misogyny are not the same
I did read it, found it quite simplistic but admired her directness and appreciated the controversy it caused. I like that she clearly points out that it may be rational for a woman to hate men considering all the misogyny they inflict.
I did not notice the line you mention, but perhaps she considers socialization to be the main reason for a person to behave according to a gender role. In the case of trans, perhaps it reflects the view that people who don't adhere to gender norms were socialized towards that.
How would a "cis man" be socialized as a woman? Bruh, the Wojak with the dented head comes to mind
Ok, I finished listening and here’s my final thoughts. I really enjoyed her defense of misandry and learning to center women. She had some thoughts about putting men on a pedestal when she was young that really resonated with me because I valued male approval wayyyy too much when I was younger and it really alienated me from other women and made me a worse friend to my women friends. But is it worth it considering she panders to men in the very first chapter? I’m going to say, no it’s not. It is short tho, so it’s got that going for it.
Try Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny or Hunting Girls by Kelly Oliver.
I’ve read Down Girl. I’m pretty sure she does the TRA pandering thing in the forward. I’ll hafta check when I get home. I’ll check out Hunting Girls, tho, thanks for the suggestion.
I tend to edit that shit out in my mind bc I know profs have to virtue-signal that crap. So sick of it. I fought my editor HARD not to do this in my book and got away with it (I think--maybe I even blocked my own? lol
Guess thats all i needed to know about that book
I misread the description and thought it was written in 1996 but it was written in 2020 so that should’ve been my first clue. She’s got some good points that are all undermined by the fact that she thinks some men are women.
That's my reading list shortened by one book, then. I'm frankly uninterested in the insights of someone who can't define one-third of the words in her title.
The claim that "transwomen" aren't socialized male has no basis in reality.
It's purely because those men said so that women like her are repeating it.
If you know the basics of male socialization and how it translates into behavior and thought patterns, you'd see that "transwomen" are the most male of all men. They behave and think like the most depraved, misogynistic, homophobic of men.
This lady is lying through her teeth, and she knows it.
