Sappho was a right-on woman : a liberated view of lesbianism : Abbott, Sidney : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive
I still have my old copy of that book. I haven't reread it in many years. Thanks for the reminder; I will read it again.
I have just finished reading this book and I want to recommend it to my fellow lesbians here - and to anyone who might be interested in feminism and lesbian history.
It’s a good look into the guilt, shame and confusion being a lesbian can bring. It is also an historical book about what it was like to be a lesbian in the 70s and what they were hoping the future would entail. There is also a big chapter about the different movements/groups in feminism and lesbianism in the USA in the 70s which I found really interesting (it goes into very detailed politcal infighting between straight feminists and lesbians).
It was marketed as the first book written by lesbians for lesbians in the west. I don’t know how true the claim is but in any case, the two authors are lesbians.
They even talk about political lesbianism and I was glad to see they were NOT HAVING IT. Despite what some people would have us believe, lesbians at the time already thought it was problematic and I was really happy to find that out.
It is very motivational and positive, I also found a lot of parallels between what it was like to be a lesbian back then and what it’s like to be gender-critical today.
It was published in the 70s so there’s zero trans nonsense which feels so so so refreshing. I felt very represented reading this book, even if some things are a bit outdated by now (but a lot of it is still very relevant), the main message remain and it’s a very engaging look at what it was like (and still is) to be a lesbian: the psychological impact it has on us and all the ways it shapes us.
I must have highlighted passages almost every pages, it is full of things I have always felt or thought of but had never seen written down in a book before. It’s a very positive book and feels like a warm intellectual bath at just the right temperature 😌
Highly recommended ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
