Seems like the creator of Kingdom Hearts is speaking out against the uglification woke trend in games that people like Sweet Baby Inc is doing : https://gamerant.com/tetsuya-nomura-why-he-avoids-designing-ugly-characters/

Tetsuya Nomura is responsible for the creation of lots of characters widely considered gorgeous from video games like Tifa and Aerith but not only females but males too including some who are considered to be some of the biggest Chads from video games like Cloud and Sephiroth from FFVII... XD

Video games are escapist fantasy.

I don’t want to look ugly any more than I want my character to be weak (or how am I going to wrestle them dragons?!)

If “romances” are a thing, I also want decent looking partners. A big shout out to Dragon Age for this - Alistair and Cullen. I don’t want to “romance” a character who looks like a potato.

I fully admit to being shallow as hell when it comes to video game romances.

Title is clickbait. Nomura didn't say anything about "woke" character design. If you actually read the Young Jump interview, the interviewer observed that Nomura's male characters look really "cool" in contrast to popular manga characters like Naruto and Luffy. Nomura then responds with an anecdote about how a friend of his in high school complained about having to play an "ugly" character in a video game, which left an impression on Nomura and motivated him to design cool-looking main characters. The rest of the interview is focused on the development of FF7 Rebirth and future plans for the Kingdom Hearts series. There's absolutely nothing about Western video games and wokeness, that Reddit thread is full of idiots who clearly didn't read the original article.

The only game in which I don't mind one of my characters being ugly and unlikeable for a change is the Sims. The hilarity that ensues when you end up with a sim that is so repulsive that their mere presence angers every other sim on the lot is just amazing.

I'm not a huge fan of his "throw random zippers and belts everywhere" style of character design. But I respect what he's contributed to the industry over the years. And I'm glad he's weighing in on this issue. He's an important figure in gaming and people will listen to him. Furthermore, he has an actual track record of success (unlike these woke devs who think "diversity" means "make everyone ugly as shit")

I really wish that female characters in games could exist in a middle ground between "porn doll" and "badly dressed fat qweer with vitiligo"

Any examples of female character designs you like? :)

FutureBreedMachineOctober 1, 2024(Edited October 1, 2024)

🙄

This is such incel and reddit dudebro nonsense. Were you also appalled at the "ugly" horizons character?

Artemis_LivesOctober 1, 2024

Dudebro gamers are upset whenever a female character doesn't fit their specific jack-off material criteria.

FutureBreedMachineOctober 1, 2024

Yes mam, that's quite literally what they mean by "uglification". They're mad some characters don't look like 13 year old girls with watermelon tits. Pretty much every character I've seen dubbed "ugly" is just a more normal looking conventionally attractive woman 🙄 it's the stupidest thing to be mad about and im judging hard.

Femina [OP]October 1, 2024

Yeah that is true however there is also stuff like the massive flop that was Concord...

FutureBreedMachineOctober 1, 2024

I just looked at the characters but they look completely normal? I'd hardly consider them ugly, that's for sure. Or was it a flop for another reason?

Lemonade_MasqueradeOctober 2, 2024

From what I've seen, more people just didn't really know it existed. It came out way too late in an over-saturated market. I've seen more complaints about how bland the characters are than whether they or sexy, which I kind of agree with. The heroes in a hero shooter are one of the major selling points, and this one just failed to stand out. Plus it's a genre where its peers are free to play, but this was $40 (I think) up front and still had microtransactions.

Too much money poured into a milquetoast product 🤷🏻‍♀️

Here are the characters that people found ugly : https://seasonedgaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Characters-1.jpg

FutureBreedMachineOctober 6, 2024

Right, I think they look normal.

Nope, why do you ask?

ETA what I put in my other reply: I just looked at the characters but they look completely normal? I'd hardly consider them ugly, that's for sure. Or was it a flop for another reason?

RappaccinisDaughterOctober 1, 2024

People sure are making quite a bit out of this guy saying "my friend once mentioned he didn't want to be ugly in game too." He certainly doesn't mention "wokeness" at all.

Personally, I say make whatever you like as an artist and people are free to like or not like it. But yeah, it's no surprise that people want to play characters who are sexy, cool, smart, powerful, etc.

LillithOctober 1, 2024(Edited October 1, 2024)

He's good looking and has an athletic build. I can see it. Sephiroth seems too pretty to be called a Chad, but he is a literal boss.

Femina [OP]October 1, 2024(Edited October 1, 2024)

Well that depends on the way we use the word " Chad " I guess...

There are people who use it to refer only to very masculine but handsome males but there are people who use it to refer to any attractive male that lots of women seem to fawn over which Sephiroth definitely is considering all his fangirls... 😂

Sephiroth is considered a male sex symbol of video games after all...

LillithOctober 1, 2024

By that definition, he definitely meets the standard. He might BE the standard.

In my heart he is.
