Advice WantedDoes pine mulch go bad?
Posted September 8, 2023 by MaryDyer in Gardening

I discovered a bag of unopened pine mulch next to my shed. I must have bought it last summer and forgotten about it. Can I use it or does mulch rot eventually if kept in a bag?

Most mulch is supposed to rot and break down over time, which improves soil structure.

Unless it got wet in the bag, it should be fine.

It will rot over time in your yard, but that's a good thing - it makes your soil better. It's much better than that crap made out of old tires.

Old tires! No!

Yeah, it is supposed to rot.

I'd smell it - if it doesn't smell bad, then it is good to use.

If it smells like there's mold growing on it, then you might not want that in the garden. (Though that would eventually rot, too.)

Ohh I honestly didn’t know mulch was supposed to rot 😆

Well, I do not know if people strictly speaking want it to compost, but that's what naturally happens.
