I ripped out my pennyroyal
Posted July 25, 2024 by MaryDyer in Gardening

I had no idea until I learned by chance this morning that it’s actually highly toxic. The little girl who lives next door and who is always buzzing around me while I’m trying to garden will eat anything she finds in a garden - especially mint. She’s a smart girl whose mom gardens a lot as well, and usually won’t eat anything until I’ve used my plant identifier app and confirmed it’s safe, but when it comes to mint she’ll usually just pluck a leaf off and eat it (yuck!) As soon as I learned that pennyroyal can cause liver failure and even death, I dug it out and threw it away.

It was sold to me as a “medicinal plant” at one of my local garden centers. There was no warning about its toxicity. I’m pretty bothered by that…
