This was such an incredible achievement. She ran 54 miles a day! And the trail is incredibly steep and difficult to traverse in many sections, which means in many instances she was doing less mileage on those days by necessity, and more than 54 miles on the other days to keep up with her goal. Just an astounding athlete.
Very interesting to see how she did it. When I heard the record number, I knew there had to be a coordinated crew involved too to prevent any off trail downtime for refueling, supply runs, etc. Absolutely wild to see the logistics she pulled together and coordinated for this (having pacers, etc).
Not at ALL denigrating the phenomenal physical feat involved in this, but I knew (from living along the AT, and routinely seeing and assisting through hikers during the season), that to there is a trade off between coordinating logistics and achieving pure speed/efficiency. The planning and coordination she had to do to eliminate on-the -trail logistics is a feat in and of itself.
