I just watched this gem of a movie and I just HAD to rave about it here!
Where has this movie been all my life? There’s drama, there’s romance, nobody dies, a very satisfying sex scene (so good I had to watch it TWICE!) and the lesbians have a happy ending.
Goodness I wish there were more movies like that out there!
Has anyone else seen it?
EDIT: I think I’m gonna do like a daily movie review type deal of the miscellaneous lesbian films I’ve been finding. Is there interest there if I do that?
I have high standards for lesbian movies. I won’t watch lesbian movies if they even hint of male gaze, or are otherwise insufferable in writing in some way.
Examples: I tried watching three other lesbian movies to see if they were any good and they fell flat to me in the first ten minutes, so I turned them off. They were:
—Looking for Her - seemed like a good plot to begin with, but the one lead’s roommate appears to be of the gender mafia.
—Lez Bomb - irritating plot conflict that revolves around a male lead refusing to respect boundaries.
—Christmas at the Ranch - Hallmark style writing that wrote the more masculine lesbian lead’s mannerisms as a stereotypical male lead.
I saw it yesterday and agree 100%. You expressed my experience perfectly.
I wanted to watch it again immediately after.
I'm seeing it tomorrow. I can't wait! I remember in like 2008 they said the movie would come out in 2016 and it felt so far away to little me. Now it's almost 2025.
I was reluctant to see it because I felt like splitting it into two movies was a cynical cash grab. But I've changed my mind after seeing clips of the film/songs online. Grande and Erivo really are amazing in this movie. I doubt I'll see it in cinema (two hours with no intermission is too much for me LOL). But I'll totally buy it or watch it on streaming
So no trans characters to put up with?
Nope, all clear! However, there's slight homoerotic tension/a moment between Fiyero and one of Glinda's male friends (essentially, he's fawning after him in a comedic scene. It's honestly quite funny, lol).
Excellent!
Having younger children this is what I was wondering.
It might be the kind of magical experience millions of children in the 20th center remember with the Wizard of Oz. Now we have two "favorite movies" based on a classic feminist story, with great music.
