NewsWARNING: HOMOPHOBIA: Jaelene Daniels has come out of retirement to play for North Carolina again
Posted December 20, 2021 by Rhapsody in Lesbians

Jaelene Daniels, formerly Hinkle has been reacquired by the North Carolina women’s soccer team the Courage.

Hinkle is notoriously homophobic, so you can imagine that the lesbian fans and players were happy when she retired. However, NCC head manager Steve Malik thought differently and allowed her to come back out of retirement.

Hinkle has been in several scandals herself of her own making as she has gone on evangelical TV network the 700 Club with Pat Robertson to spout hateful rhetoric against homosexuals. She also refused two call-ups to the USWNT lead by lesbian Jill Ellis at the time because she didn’t want to wear Pride jerseys.

This is all in the wake of an internet breaking scandal in the league of their previous head coach Paul Riley sexually abusing lesbian players at his stay in Portland with the Thorns.

It doesn’t seem like any team is actually making any point to believe the players or protect the players from homophobia in a league which is proportionally half lesbian.

NCC in particular is back to their old ways.

Thorns and Courage competing for who can be the worst right now lol

I hate it here so much you have no idea.

I’ve been a thorns fan since 2019 when I just got into it because of Tobin Heath.

The Thorns have gone to shit ever since they lost her (though I have some new favorites, but most were traded away during the draft: namely Westphal and Charley). I love Rocky with all my heart sincerely, and Crystal Dunn, so I’m particularly pissed at the Thorn’s FO not doing their due diligence to check social media.

The Thorns themselves were always a very close knit community, with a family-like presence between both fans and teammates alike. The Thorns have the best fans in the world and it seems like the new head coach and general manager (who is a woman of color) are not trying hard enough to keep that loving vibe going. Of course, Portland is also TRA central, so how much is it actually “loving”? (Spoiler: not a lot on that topic but that’s a different rant. I had to take a break from watching the league during June because the Thorn’s captain arm bands were trans flags, and trans flags in general were everywhere for multiple teams).

Yeah this new player seems VERY off-brand for them. Wouldn't be surprised if she gets booed at a lot. I haven't seen the extent of her social media activity but I find it weird that there has been so much focus on the luke-warm conservative tweets she has liked about transwomen participating in women's sports and not the blatantly racist, xenophobic and misogynistic ones...

Also, I don't follow the NWSL super closely as I'm not in the US and the player drafting/trading/allocation system confuses me but it still shocks me that they let Tobin go. I'm sure she would have liked to finish her career there.

Rhapsody [OP]December 21, 2021

My concerns and thoughts exactly, they are not booing her for the explicit racist and xenophobic tweets that she’s retweeted and posted on her social. She will be booed if she ever comes out onto the pitch, and Portland probably will be booed now too indefinitely even if they do get rid of her.

The lowdown is that the drafting and allocation system is a mess, but they’ve done away with allocation starting this next season. They never should’ve put Tobin’s rights up for grabs. I know she wanted to be at Portland for her entire career, so the topic is still a sad one for me. Essentially, Louisville’s now ex coach Christy Holly made some very bad decisions and it crushed the momentum for that expansion team. Good thing he’s gone now.

That’s really messed up. There’s part of me who is hoping nobody watches that team anymore but I’m sure there are probably lesbian players as well so it wouldn’t be fair. Therefore I hope they boo her every game and in every stadium.

Rhapsody [OP]December 21, 2021(Edited December 21, 2021)

In the past they have booed her whenever she’s gotten the ball.

I was a Thorns fan, but after them drafting a racist, I don’t know if I can be that anymore…

I was never a fan of the Courage, but there are players on that team that I love dearly (who are lesbians in relationships with other teammates). I want to support my favorite team in the Thorns, and my favorite players league wide, but I will always hate the NCC for Hinkle and hope they lose whenever she’s on their roster.

EDIT: idky this was downvoted when I’m saying Hinkle deserves the booing and I’m saying that I never rooted for the courage?? There are players on multiple teams that are lesbians and those players are sweet and determined women that I wish the world for 10x over, so I’m saying in this comment that I will not root for the team that is beyond problematic, and I will not root for Portland if they decide to have Nasello play, but I will always root for the players that I love so dearly.

What I dont get is how she's bi racial married to a white guy but thinks gays shouldn't have the right to marry....not seeing the irony in that at one point in time she wouldn't have the right to marry her husband. I really dont get these people.

It’s how it is with any colonized ethnicity and toxic Christianity: it leads to self hate of one’s culture or race and these people feel like they have to…make up for their “impurities” by being vocally homophobic, right wing, extremely religious in order to fit in. They were raised in the hate, they become the hate.

GeneralLesbianDecember 20, 2021

This is absolutely terrible. Who ever gave her a job, considering her track record, is just as much garbage as she is.

Rhapsody [OP]December 20, 2021

It’s the Front Office’s fault, the manager of the club decided to bring her back, which for one thing I’m not hearing enough angry discourse from fans asking for Steve Malik to step down considering he most likely also new about the Riley allegations as well.

I’ve heard them call for the owner of the thorns, Merritt Paulson to sell (which he hasn’t yet) over his part in all of this scandal with Riley, but not enough towards Malik.

I love this game. I love these players. But the league’s team owners are not making amends or being punished for their misdemeanors.

GeneralLesbianDecember 20, 2021

I don't follow women's soccer. But was the scandal a well known thing with the fans? Our is this just delayed reaction.

Rhapsody [OP]December 20, 2021

The scandal is well known to fans since this October, when the Athletic article had dropped. I have it posted to here somewhere but here is the Athletic article detailing the abuse and scandal here. It was posted in September of this year. It lead to a massive clearing of house of abusive coaches in the league, but there are still general managers and owners around that were complicit to either this abuse or other abuse (such as the Washington spirit verbal abuse from their now ex coach Richie Burke).

GeneralLesbianDecember 20, 2021

Last statement should be: a delayed reaction. Having trouble with my keyboard. It's supposed to be micro ai that should increase vocabulary. Nope.

Is there a subreddit for Women's Soccer? Or a fan page or Facebook fan page. If any of these things exist, you could rally the troops.

Rhapsody [OP]December 21, 2021

There’s a subreddit for this, but we all know how Reddit is with these kinds of things.

They have mostly been criticizing biological reality, and not so much so about Hinkle’s homophobia (I mean they have, and they’ve expressed distain for Nasello’s racism too, but every sentence is peppered with “and tRANsPhobiA” so any conversation about the two is put aside in the name of focusing on and getting angry at women not wanting men in women’s sports)
