Everyone and their mother upholds Stone Butch Blues as this absolute cornerstone of lesbian culture, and it's the number one book that gets recommended for anyone wanting to learn more about our history.
It's listed up there with Dykes to Watch Out For! People fucking beat you over the head with it. And I get that it has its place and value for butches, especially of older generations, but it's also rife with gender ideology. In my search for similar books that are just about lesbians, specifically about 1900s lesbian culture, I've hardly gotten any further. So many of these books, like Butch Is A Noun, Tomboy Survival Guide, Persistence, even Female Masculinity, all have a significant focus on transsexuality.
I'm just frustrated that the gender movement seems inextricably tied to lesbianism. I want to dig deep in our community without all the gender bullshit in my face every time I turn around! I'm not butch or femme myself so maybe there's parts of it I just can't understand, but I can't be the only one frustrated with this, right?
I'm stuck at home with COVID and in a mood to rant, so hopefully this is coherent. Let me know your thoughts xx
