Fried Green Tomatoes was one of my favorite movies growing up. There was always something so romantic about the story of two close female friends always staying by each other's side through thick and thin.
This movie showed strength in a way no other piece really could. The reality of being a Lesbian woman in the US Historical Christian South. Although there is no real display of affection, the implications are enough for any small town Southern person to know.
Anyways, I don't want to hear anything about "modern" standards. This movie made my life back then and the intimacy between the two women is legendary.
I watched this movie at 13 and it was the first time I saw lesbians on screen, despite it not being blatant. My mom, friend, sister and I were staying in a cabin and the only television was the dvds they kept there. We watched Fried Green Tomatoes and I remember being so confused that my mom, sister, and friend saw nothing romantic or lesbian about the movie. I felt it though.
This is still one of my favorite movies of all time and I love the book. The movie is truly a masterpiece at saying so many things without saying anything at all.
Same!! Idgie and Ruth have been my relationship goal since I first got a VHS copy of that movie from the library!
I pirated the book when I was a very confused 13 year old and I adored it. I just now realized I’ve never seen the movie.
Oh my god, i was obsessed with that movie as a kid! I don't think i even really knew why, other than that i related a lot with Idgie and thought she was amazing. I should go rewatch it...
There were a lot of movies my mom only watched with me while the men were away. This was one of them.
