questionHow can we help LGB rights worldwide in a meaningful way
Posted April 23, 2023 by FutureFebfem in LovingWomen

I have to thank /u/DMforwomenslandnearu for this idea. Between us, we are going to look for organisations helping, fighting for, and raising awareness of LGB inequality worldwide.

In the meantime, we need your help too!

We were discussing how there is still a long way to go for so many of our gay, lesbian and bi sisters and brothers worldwide. About how some LGBT organisations in the west felt that because marriage equality had been achieved in the US and parts of Europe, the fight for gay rights was done, and they could move onto trans rights.

However, our “equality” means nothing if there are still people who can’t get married, at best, and at worst, are actively punished for being gay.

So, how can we bring about MEANINGFUL change. Are there any organisations you know that can help?

If any lesbians would like to share this to the lesbian circle I’d be so grateful, but at the same time, I’m bi, and not my place to say what is posted in your space.

Also, I’ve just realised how Western-centric I’m being with this post. We have members from all over the world. If gay rights are still needed in your country, please tell us would help. Or just what we don’t know.

On a similar note, if I’m going about this the wrong way, or being tone-deaf, please say.

Let's not.

I'm serious. Let's not get into lending our energies to another movement that benefits men. Let's not get sucked into "feminism is for everyone" and being everyone's Activism Nannies. Women have been there, done that over "universal" suffrage, over civil rights, and now, over the original LGB rights which mutated into genderism. How many of the men in those groups have really put themselves out for the issues that are critical to women's liberation: full control of their own fertility, full control of their own sexuality, full control of their own bodies, full benefits from their own labour? Women have sacrificed and expected to be rewarded, and look where we are now.

For a change, let's really center women. We advocate for women who are lesbians. We advocate for women who are bisexual. We do not advocate for men's causes, unless we have a formal and explicit alliance as a group with a group, that includes action on women's interests. We advocate for women being free to love and live with whomever we please, but for a change, let's leave the men to carry their own shit.

I won't get into the extent to which North America needs to clean up its own act before it's a model for anyone to emulate.

Just my personal opinion but I think a good starting point might be the countries that actively criminalise homosexuality, finding out more about the context in each country and what organisations already exist in those countries and what solutions/actions those organisations who have already been campaigning recomend.

I think raising awareness and putting pressure on the elected representatives of our own countries to act can also make a difference as no country want to be embarrassed on the world stage for their human rights record.

While I belive that there are some things that can be done on a global scale, I don't know if there is a one size fits all solution that will be effective in every country.

That's a great idea.

Here's a good map I found after I saw what you wrote.

I'm going to look into Guyana first because it's landlocked by countries that don't criminalize homosexuality.

There is the LGB Alliance in the UK. I'm not sure that's what you are looking for. I'd like us to focus on the issues of same-sex attracted people, but this movement is doing so much harm to us it's hard to ignore. It's endorsing conversion therapy. It's parents who'd rather have their LGB kid be trans.
