questionHow do you work your sexuality into a cover letter without making it weird?
Posted May 16, 2024 by stern-as-steel in LovingWomen

The job description notes: "Women, people of color, persons with disabilities and LGBTQ individuals are strongly urged to apply."

If this is going to give me a leg up (which it probably will, at a little liberal hippie org), I want to mention that I'm same-sex attracted. But I can't figure out how to do that without making it weird.

If I had ever been a part of an organization, I would mention that or put it on my resume, but I don't really have something that fits.

The best I've got is a note at the end of the cover letter: "Per the note below the job description, I want to note that I am a same-sex attracted woman."

Is there a better way? Help!

I’m not sure what a CV/Cover letter entails in your country but if you talk about your hobbies somewhere, I would just lie and say you are part of a LGBT bookclub. It’s a pretty harmless lie and gets the message across in a non in-your-face way.

Oh, that's smart. And it's not even that untrue - I'm in a feminist one and we read a lot of wlw stuff.

ooo any recs for wlw books? I don't even bother looking bc of the inclusion of men in that genre now

That reminds me of a couple weeks ago when I went to the big book store in my area to look around and made the mistake of going to the LGBTQ+ section w/o knowing exactly what wlw book I wanted beforehand. I picked up the first one that caught my eye that looked to be about actual lesbians, but nope it's the story of a woman falling for a TIM. I felt like Elaine in that one episode of Seinfeld after she learned George brought a book in the bathroom. Scene at 2:08 for anyone unfamiliar- https://youtu.be/oPkPXmrDUt0si=rZXZ6bveH-LCzssM

I don't get why anyone who isnt a TIM would read that. it's rape porn.

A recent good read was Fire Logic. Also poetry by Judy Grahn. And The Second Coming of Joan of Arc. Nonfiction too - Marilyn Frye, Material Girls.

That's perfect! Bonus points for community involvement/extracurricular whatever.

Does the job application have a section for demographics? Sometimes, online application systems will have a while section where you can put your race, ethnicity, veteran status, etc.

If there is a section like that, then you don't need to put it on your CV.
