I've been getting into older movies lately because new shit is packed full of libfemmery and I'm just... bored with it. It even snuck into stop motion with the Wendell and Wild's self-hating TIF. And the Strong Independent Woman (in a wet white tank top) who's punished for being so or who ends up just needing the right dick trope also bores me to no end. We get some good horror gals from time to time who survive everything, but there's always weird pandery conditions that I'm not sure we can get away from.
So I'm looking for movies of any age where women are actually interesting characters in their own right without the inevitable letdowns we've all grown accustomed to. Not opposed to a good romantic tale, I just don't want the woman's brain to fall out and her whole personality change the moment a dude steps into frame. Or she just needs a guy to step in at the last minute to save her ass since she can't be too competent or powerful.
Tired of seeing us get fucked over again and again in media. Please pleasantly surprise me.
I remember loving 9 to 5 as a kid and then loving Where the Crawdads Sing recently. The Ginger Snaps series of movies in the early 2000s was also a fun, gory romp. And Alien, of course! While they're not perfect and there is some objectification, they're still so enjoyable. I'm not looking for perfection, because I do not think we'll find it. If you ended up saying, 'Good for her!', I want to hear about it!
Anyway! Gonna watch one of those and try to pop back in to other recommendations. Thank you for your generous suggestions in advance.
