So much better than I thought it would be. Honestly I’d lost a lot of interest in Bob’s Burgers over the past few years; I mean c’mon, the show doesn’t have the same spark as it did the first 4 or so seasons. When Louise inexplicably changed from hyperactive screamy crazy girl to low-key, monotone, sounding bored-with-everything girl, the show lost its charm. I loved crazy psychotic adorably-evil Louise. I also didn’t like the shift away from restaurant/family-focused plots to school-focused plots, or the increasing ridiculousness of plots as the seasons progressed. It’s like how the show Raising Hope went from a cute show about a single dad raising his daughter with the help of his sort of wacky parents to “The Burt and Virginia Get Into Shenanigans” show, with Hope as a side plot.
Anyway, I really enjoyed the movie! I was dreading watching it, because I was expecting basically a cash grab, like so many movies that come on the heels of a show that’s dying a slow death in its 12th season. But I don’t think it was a cash grab! It genuinely seemed like a passion project that the creators put years of work into. The jokes were subtle but worked really well, unlike the in-your-face loudness of every animated [children’s] movie since like 2006. It felt natural. The songs were catchy and I’ve been listening to them nonstop for days now. The animation was beautiful because the creators used their increased budget to hire more animators. It was cute, feel-good, sweet, and damned entertaining! Highly recommend!
