Black Panther Wakanda Forever
Posted June 29, 2024 by coord in Movies

Hi. Anybody watched it?

It was a special experience for me, because of Letitia Wright (maybe I've got a crush đź–¤ I buyed a 3d modell of her lol), the world and the song Con La Brisa.

But the violence against Shuri and the other female characters, then the skinny body of female BP and fast fashion got me angry and bored. I really hoped to see a muscular female BP (similar to Iron Man suit) that unites female comrads and truly takes brutal revenge on the male(s) that violated her kingdom. She cried for nothing.

Not the best role Letitia Wright got, but I think she makes the best out of male-crap that they allow her to do.

I usually mind the lack of muscles in female action stars but in this case Wright was cast before they knew she'd soon be BP. I guess they could have cast a new character and all but it's my understanding that in the comics, Wrights character does take up the BP mantle at some point. Wright looks to me to be naturally that size. Just look at her body frame. It's one of the main things that gives TIMs away. Look at the size of her wrist bones for example.

Superhero movies are power fantasies. BP makes a point of including both men and women in that fantasy. So I don't mind the female directed violence with the understanding that the women can defend themselves just as well as the men.

Such movies are power fantasies, imo that's why the producers could have made a Ironman-like BP suit for her to make her bulky, but they choose to put a spandex on her skinny body. I didn't see this as a upgrade, feel it is misogynistic. For me another way to see the misogyny is in the scenes when Shuri is attacked by her "love interest" the fishboy, what a irk. The end-fight was cruel towards Shuri, and the part with the male infant a grim reminder. Shuri wept in vain.

The hyper anorectic bodies of a lot of actresses skeeve me out, tbh. I feel like everyone is reaffirming Zendaya's obvious eating disorder, for example. I know I might be accused of body shaming here, but the reality is that these are the bodies held up as 'fit' and 'beautiful', so they are the bodies weaponized against women w/o eating disorders or Ozempic. Normal bodies are seen as fat and unattractive when measured against the (ill, underweight, unhealthy) standard and encourage women's self-hatred and bodily self-abuse--from bulemia, anorexia, and orthorexia to drug abuse and surgery (getting one's cheek fat removed, eg).

I think body shaming or lookism starts when others insult you and behave like bullies. I like muscular women and want to have some muscles too, but it is hard for me. Sadly I had many situations from real-life with strangers that often see in me things you mentioned (bulemia, anorexi, drug abuse....) and they insult me for it. For example they make choking noises and tell me to eat more so that I get more breasts or call me bones. Obviously disgusted by my appearance. Don't know why they do it, maybe lack of empathy, but I never insult others for their bodies, it never crossed my mind.

Yep, been there. I have been fat shamed my entire life. I once got a piece of hate mail that said, "if all women were as fat as you, men would stop raping"; I will never forget it. It came with a drawing I think of me being raped and another one of me as a rhino. I moved out of the state and never returned. By the way, the average American woman is a size 16. I was a size 14 when this happened.

It's not body-shaming when what you're criticizing is a disorder and a culture that promotes it. Anorexia is the psych disorder with the highest mortality rate -- I believe, of all of them. And I had an anorexic sister when I was young. I still zero in on photos, even in catalogues, where the arms and neck are too thin, muscle wasting, the jawbone too prominent. For all the increased awareness, patriarchy seems to keep right on going. Just trying new and different shades of lipstick on the pig. And it's profitable! For some reason.

I loved it, but I didn't understand why she had to give up her throne. I know people were so resistant to a female black panther, and because of that the movie got flack but still. Some of the superhero suits were trash, but that's a Disney problem that has invaded all these movies.

Queen Ramonda is worth the price of admission. I would not want her angry with my nation. The rest of the movie was just OK. I agree with the super thin body types, etc...I'd love to see even a bit more realistic body types, even in fantasy like this.

Hmmm... I did see it, and I did enjoy it. It had good parts to it and I'm glad it got made. Unfortunately it really did milk the death of Chadewick Boseman as hard as it possibly could. It really left a bad taste in my mouth. But overall, it was visually stunning and had many interesting segments.

As for Wright, I don't know much about her. I'm neither a fan nor a hater.

It wasn't that they milked it, rather that they tried to talk about him as much as possible and have the movie revolve around his passing because people were mad Shuri was going to be black panther. Despite it being reasonable, and really who else could of done it. Even with all the respect they payed him, people just cannot stand a female lead in a movie like this, not unless she's sexualized to hell.

ya, for me this was one of the boring things that they gave Boseman so much space and thus based Shuri's role on him (the little girl following the big man's footsteps...)

I would have liked Shuri to be the protagonist with her own goals in the first movie. My reason to watch the movies was because of the actress, superpowers and world.

As for Letitia Wright, you should watch a few movies and series she's in. I know her from "Mangrove", "Black Mirror", and "Humans" (English version).

I think she's really good, just her roles are made to appeal to men more than to women.

Now I even had a 3D sculpture made of her as a little souvenir lol. Quality is ok, it was a prototype. The print wasn't as detailed on the face as the preview. https://i.postimg.cc/fW5hyRtj/Letitia-Wright3dmodell.jpg

I'm looking forward to get an armor version with the helmet showing on the base and her body looking more like the muscular BP, a BP-style Ironman suit.

It would have been really good, but I don't know that she was really a good fit for that storyline. Another thing is that the franchise is about a man, he was the main character until he died. So I'm kind of sort of okay with it.

Very interesting perspective. Well, I have access to Black Mirror so maybe I'll try to find the episode she was in.

Cool sculpture! It looks great.

If you are not a hardcore Marvel fan, you cannot appreciate the loss of Chadwick Boseman to the MCU. His death was not being milked, his death devastated the team behind Black Panther and they poured that into the movie.

WomanwithopinionsJune 30, 2024

It was cheap and tacky.

VesperHolicJune 30, 2024

You can't have your main character die off-screen and not address it somehow. Integrating Boseman's untimely death in the plot was necessary.

WomanwithopinionsJuly 1, 2024

The issue wasn't that it was integrated. That's obviously necessary. The issue was that they did it in a way that tried to press every emotional button for as long as they could in the hopes that it translated to extra dollars.

VesperHolicJuly 1, 2024

Right, you felt it wasn't sincere. I think it's a bit of both, it really did mess up the crew (understandably so, Boseman seemed to be a good person) and I believe they wanted to honour him the best they could. But it would be naive to think there weren't also suits pushing for insincere emotional manipulation for bucks in the team as well. Not necessarily the creatives either, more likely the stakeholders.

I really dislike the sort of stuff you described, but didn't feel over-the-top to me, sticking to the movie's content alone (I didn't follow the press tour or any promo material).

She got an Oscar for best costume design because of the incredible amount of symbolism and storytelling that was done through costume. It original creation of costume for multiple cultures, as opposed to throwback period pieces, as well as meeting the technical challenges of creating costumes that function under water. Why would you belittle such an accomplishment for an African-American woman by attributing it to sexism?
