I saw a screening of this in a physical venue today, with an audience largely made up of members of the original scene. The movie was released in 2002, it's not new, but it is an amazing, lauded documentary, and filled in all kinds of stuff I never knew about the scene, which I wasn't really involved with, but heard a good bit about.
Be prepared for descriptions of incidents of male recording industry sexism (extreme), young lesbians near suicide until the movement reached them, and women who had to write and perform these songs so they would not die.
It's a wonderful film, very powerful, and I'd recommend it to anyone who cares about women, whether they think they're interested in "women's music"(and/or its history) or not. It's available for streaming here.
