Yesterday I sat down to tea with the mom of one of my youngest's friends, expecting to make small talk about the kids' new schools and how fast they grow up and blah blah blah.
Well the answer to my "How have you been?" was not what I expected.
Turns out her kid, then 8, was raped by her babysitter's son, age 15. She was at the sitter's, and they went upstairs in one of the rooms and he raped her. He told her not to tell, and she did, and the police came, and he confessed... there is no he said/she said here. They both said.
And to be clear we are talking full on, penis in vagina, hymen-tearing, could lead to pregnancy (though unlikely at that age but not unheard of) rape. Not "you show me yours, I'll show you mine", not a grope, full on rape. (Not that the other things would EVER be mildly OK between a fifteen year old and an eight year old).
They are going through the legal process. He is too young to go to juvie. He's just out and about, wandering around the village, hanging with other kids, including little ones. He has to see a psycologist.
My friend's lawyer is trying to get him committed to a psycological institution, where he'd be supervised and get intense treatment, and presumably would be less likely to be able to harm other kids.
But it is likely it won't happen. Probably nothing will happen because he's 15 and had bad grades and we are supposed to feel sorry for him.
And if nothing happens it basically means that rape is legal. Because it looks like he won't even get a slap on the wrist.
Remember... there's no doubt as to what happened. He confessed. She's 8. He doesn't claim she wanted it.
