I am from the US, & we don't have a decent public mental health alternative. There used to be places where people who were a danger to themselves or others would be in residential care. It was sometimes abused by people who had family members committed who should not have been, & there was abuse within the institutions. But it is needed, with safeguards.
I have read about people in the UK being sectioned when they should not be, are not a threat, & their families want them home.
There has to be some sort of state residential Institutions for those who have mental health issues who cannot be treated/cared for by family members.
And drug addiction has also made things worse.
Also, in the past, there were places that even people who made very little could rent, in the US they used to be called flophouses, there were also single room occupancy units. We need a sort of micro apartments public housing so people can move out of the family home to learn how to be at least semi-independent, get help doing some kind of work, and perhaps some sort of support network. But they don't have incentive to do this if living with parents because they can more easily intimidate parents.
There have been multiple times where a grandmother or mom has come to TPO begging for us to help find a way to arrest her son/grandson because she's terrified that he's going to hurt baby-mama.
But, since he hasn't yet, it would be useless to call the cops.
They beg for a psych hold and we review it with them and they always realize he'll just be worse when he comes out.
And the whole time you can tell that she loves the man she's talking about. The tone is always "please save my beloved son from himself! Before he goes too far!"
Not even remotely surprising. The problem is, these men - and boys - can't be helped once they are capable of that kind of violence toward women. If we are unwilling to give them all the death penalty, we need to figure out a way to make sure they never have access to women and girls for the rest of their lives.
