FYI I have been making an archive of Ovarit and it's about 90% complete, it should be done well before April 27 and I'll post the link to it here
Edit: I have reserved the domain name ovarit-archive.online I'll set it to redirect to ovarit.com until the archive is ready
Edit 2: Several people have messaged me asking for their posts to not be included in the archives for privacy, I will not upload anything online until I figure out a way to handle these requests
Thank you and brava. You are a goddess, a heroine, a lifesaver, a champ.
When you have the chance, please let us know where/when we can make donations to help pay for the costs - or to cover them completely.
I got a good deal on the domain name and storage space, I won't need any donations for at least the first 3 months, also I'm not sure how to set up a page to receive donations but I'll figure it out and post a link later, thank you for the generosity
How large is the archive? How much storage does it need?
It's about 45gb
If you ran a compression archive, like .7z or .xz at medium compression ratio, what would the file size be?
Asking for file sharing purposes. Text files compress really well. (PSA: Never store compressed files as backups.)
Never store compressed files as backups? Why not? Can it corrupt the files?
All files corrupt. Bit rot is real.
The difference is that you can still sometimes play corrupted uncompressed files.
However, to play a compressed file, you have to uncompress it first.
So what happens when a compressed archive gets corrupted?
You can’t uncompress it. You get errors.
What happens when you’ve compressed a whole bunch of files into one archive?
You’ve just lost your whole library
So back to my first example. Yes, maybe that single file is not playable anymore if the corruption was bad enough, but the rest of your library is still intact.
Compression was initially invented to lower the difficulty of transferring large files over a slow speed transfer rate and severe bandwidth limits.
Umm I see... Well I have more than enough available space in my devices and External HDs... :)
Thank goodness
Thank you so much.
There is far too much information for this to just pass into oblivion.
Thank you so much for doing this. I don't know where I'm going after Ovarit (I especially love the text-based old-school format) but I'm so very grateful that the things everyone has written, all those resources and arguments and encouragement, will still be available. <3
I've been ill and haven't logged into Ovarit since the closing announcement. Seeing this has been wonderful news. Thank you SO SO much for preserving women's voices online.
You are the GOAT - Goddess of all time!
You are a heroine! That's amazing! I was so worried that this archive of women's voices and wisdom would be lost.
Can people who don't want their posts archived just delete them now? (can you 'update' the archive easily?)
No clue about all of this - just tossing it out there
This is great! Thank you for your work!
You might want to consider making the archive easily clonable (either by downloading directly, or by bittorrent or something like that). Keeping an archive site up will have similar challenges to keeping the real site up, so having some redundancy would be nice. And also many of us are probably hoping to do a very similar thing, and lightening the load on Ovarit's servers would be a nice thing to do.
Naah a static website archive would be significanly cost efficient than an dynamic one, which ovarit is. Specially the comute side.
AWS ain't cheap
I meant the non-technical aspects of dealing with threats and legal challenges etc, but yes, I'm sure it would cost less money to make it static. Personally, I'd be more intimidated by the parts that can't be solved with just cheap bandwidth and server capacity.
Oh thank you, thank you!
I have been trying to "save" my own saved posts in some way, but it has been a struggle for me.
What you are doing is just marvelous!
You’re awesome! :) Thank you so much for taking the time to do this! 🥰
I had been so sad at the thought of us losing so much knowledge and internet history that’s been made here! I’m glad that it will be preserved!
Thank you for your willingness to step up and preserve history. It is deeply appreciated.
Several people have messaged me asking for their posts to not be included in the archives for privacy, I will not upload anything online until I figure out a way to handle these requests
Open the HTML in the file up and reuse the [Deleted] html but make it slightly different to indicate archive removal versus deleted normally?
Is there any way for her to automate that?
Should be very doable, as long as you have a username or a specific URL where a post needs to get cleared (URL easier, username harder due to the volume of content but locally there will be no request sleep needed)
Thank you so much for your hard work! I would’ve hated to see all of this lost
You are wonderful, a true fighter for women's rights and feminist record-keeping. ♥️
Thank you so so much, you’re incredible! I’ll donate a bit too if you want or need 🩷
Fantastic! Wonderful! Thank you!
Although this may trigger a pile-on, I would like to ask those who don't want their posts to be included in the archives to reconsider, if those requests stand in the way of archiving Ovarit. Here's why:
Ovarit is a valuable part of feminist history and we want it to be available online forever.
We all posted here, under handles that we chose, and let our posts sit here on a website that anyone in the world could see for years and years. Why would we backtrack on that decision now? What's the difference between the world seeing your post on ovarit.com or seeing it on ovarit-archive.com?
If you really, truly don't want your posts visible on ovarit-archive.com, you still have a month to go back through the site and delete them all. Please do not place that burden on someone else's shoulders.
But if the archive's 90% complete, it's too late?
Yeah I'm just gonna have to rerun a lot of it to make sure any deletions are not included.
