You're telling me women do things that don't revolve around caregiving? You're telling me they have fantasies and desires that don't involve penises? Not possible

Nope, you gotta go to war for the dick!

Speaking of historical literature, this was my childhood. Watching Anne of Green Gables (the one casting Megan Follows), and pondering the lesbian desires of the red-haired orphan. To my oblivious self, Anne was more frequently involved in expressing desires for females, particularly her "bosom friend" Diana Barry. She was a woman in love with her "friend":

"I love Diana so, Marilla, I cannot live without her. But I know very well when we grow up that Diana will get married and go away and leave me."

"We must join hands--so," said Anne gravely. "It ought to be over running water. We'll just imagine this path is running water. I'll repeat the oath first. I solemnly swear to be faithful to my bosom friend, Diana Barry, as long as the sun and moon shall endure. Now you say it and put my name in."

Diana repeated the "oath" with a laugh fore and aft. Then she said:

"You're a queer girl, Anne. I heard before that you were queer. But I believe I'm going to like you real well."

Sounds like wedding vows ...

And "queer"?! Why do you play with my heart Montgomery? Sigh ...

At the time (9-10 year old), I did not know I was a lesbian, nor did I know what a lesbian was. What I knew was the frustration I felt when the "creators" (Montgomery) of the story ruined my ship, and had Anne go to war for dick (Gilbert).

I was bold, and unapologetic. Other people claiming that I would be with a man one day made me want to vomit. "No way! My education is more important!".

Anne was bold and unapologetic. I was bold and unapologetic. I saw myself in her ... until I didn't. They didn't allow her to love as boldly, as unapologetically, as unencumbered by social expectations.

At least Anne marries Diana and doesn't revolve around freaking Gilbert in my imagination.

I never read the second book because I couldn't bear watching her grow up and marry Gilbert
