No one has even checked with the poor gulf what it identifies as

A nautical hate crime surely

pennygadgetFebruary 14, 2025

Will the ocean kill itself if I call it the Gulf of Mexico?

OwnLyingEyesFebruary 13, 2025(Edited February 13, 2025)

If like me you haven't started calling it the Gulf of America yet, perhaps you can understand why people might choose to opt out of new labels applied to things OR people to further political agendas you don't support or agree with, and can perhaps agree that people shouldn't be punished for refusing to do so. You should even be able to understand why, when people attempt to force you to do so, your reaction is to tell them to 'sit and spin' rather than sweetly comply with a smile.

Sorry, did your own tired bullshit blow up in your face there?

shewolfoffranceFebruary 13, 2025

Why are you so upset about this? America and Mexico are social constructs.

pennygadgetFebruary 14, 2025

And the gulf is literally fluid! 🤣

shewolfoffranceFebruary 14, 2025

I mean, that water has literally been circulating across the globe for billions of years!

realityismykinkFebruary 13, 2025

By this logic, if you insist on continuing to call it the Gulf of Mexico, then you have no problem with "deadnaming" and understand perfectly when and why it's appropriate and correct.

Aze2310February 13, 2025

Honestly I’m proud of misgendering the “gulf of America” and males that have a mental illness 🤷‍♀️

pennygadgetFebruary 14, 2025

I proudly deadname the Gulf Of Mexico, Twitter, Tim McBride, Bruce Jenner, etc.....

ElizabelchFebruary 13, 2025

The Gulf was renamed by males with a mental illness, so I guess that Venn diagram is a circle

ArenlaefFebruary 13, 2025(Edited February 13, 2025)

This was a weird way to find out that Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico. I suppose not as weird as a 6'7, 45-year-old man renaming himself Neveah and calling himself a little girl, but I don't think I'll be able to look at the map and automatically remember its new name anytime soon.

I have no intention to call it the Gulf of America, nor does anybody else I know.

HoneycreeperBird LesbianFebruary 16, 2025

It sounds so bad, I refuse

Feministunderyrbed [OP]February 16, 2025

So far I’ve seen Axios, Google Maps, and Apple Maps bend the knee.

HoneycreeperBird LesbianFebruary 16, 2025

The fact that they’ve sold out to fascist idiocy tells me all I need to know. It’s infuriating that there’s such a monopoly that you can’t boycott their ass-kissing.

So far from what I know, they’ve only changed it on their maps for US IPs.

Trump will never make me call the Gulf of Mexico something else. The supremist nationalism is increasing and it’s scary.

emptiedriverFebruary 13, 2025

Yeah, terrible analogy to start w since who is supporting renaming the Gulf of Mexico?

But, if you want to compare, switching names is one thing - for instance I had a friend in college who decided she wanted a more glamorous name than the ones her midwestern parents had given her and chose a new one, and it took me a little while to adapt to it. But as a friend, I eventually did. However, I wouldn't support her birth certificate or old records being altered. A person could get an official name change certificate though, and I don't think names need to be gendered, so a male born John could officially change his name to Jane, and people could call him that. Historical records should include everything though.

This doesn't cover sex change though. That's like a Gulf being renamed an Island or a Mountain. That's not just nominal, it's descriptively inaccurate. Whether it's called the Gulf of Mexico or America is a matter of tradition and ego, and doesn't matter much but seems dumb. But if we started to call it a Mountain and said people who waterskied there were skiing down a mountain, then it would be delusional. No one would accept that - presumably...

Feministunderyrbed [OP]February 13, 2025

You’re right, a name is just a name and unless it’s Sparkletits or His Royal Highness, or you’re naming the street where you live Emptiedriver St., I would tend to roll with the changes. But a man is no more a woman than a gulf is an island.

notsofreshfeelingFebruary 13, 2025

If you've already started calling it the Gulf of America instead of the Gulf of Mexico, you should have no trouble calling cats "dogs."

Aaaaaaaaaaaah! Gay North Dakota.

This is Great!

I have Geologist friends who will love it.

For starters, changing the Gulf of Mexico to ‘the Gulf of America’ is cringe and embarrassing. I actually thought he was kidding

But, and damn you for making me at all agree, it’s still not as stupid as calling a man…a woman

It is very US centric to refer to the US as ‘America’ and I try not to do it because it is wrong and it annoys other ‘Americans’ such as those from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America

And

Since the Gulf of Mexico is the biggest gulf in the western hemisphere, and it borders the US and Mexico, (the lands that create the ‘Gulf’) calling it the North American Gulf would actually be more correct than Gulf of Mexico/America

And also, places change names.

What is now Istanbul used to be called Constantinople and before that was called Byzantium. So name changes of places are not anti-reality

Even people change names. Maiden names are changed to married. Celebrities have stage names

This is not the same as saying up is down

nobody ever changes sex

marciekrFebruary 14, 2025

At the time it was named the Gulf of Mexico, hundreds of years ago, Spain controlled all the land surrounding the gulf. Mexico wasn't even a country yet. Mexico City was named after a nearby valley and that is likely where the name came from. Ships traveled across the Gulf of Mexico to get to Mexico City.

The hubris of thinking he has the power to change the name of an international body of water is ridiculous.

Carrots90February 14, 2025

Yes

Silly and childish too. But possible

Like a TIM can literally change his name to sparkleboobies

But he can’t change into being a woman

JACKANDJILLFebruary 13, 2025

Countries are free to name their bodies of water whatever they want, just as humans are free to name themselves whatever they want.

But pronouns are not names. They are references to objective reality of whether someone is male or female. You can't pick your pronouns.

befanaFebruary 15, 2025

I agree. And I would like to add that even names of countries can change. I used to travel to a country named Yugoslavia in my youth. It no longer exists. The same area that I knew as one country is now several countries among them Serbia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Croatia. Pronouns are a totally different matter.

Since I’m not a narcissistic bully, I will do neither.
