I loved her speech. My standards are depressingly low, but we have ZERO feminist representation in federal government. Stuff like “the government shouldn’t do business with rapists and sex traffickers and peeping toms” is so basic to us, but is actually never said in places like Congress. Mace seems genuinely passionate about helping women and girls. If including Christian talking points gets her more support and attention, fine by me. A politician advocating feminist legislation with bipartisan support could be so influential right now, and I hope people don’t completely ignore this opportunity out of some ‘ideological impurity’ concern.

I don't care that she's a Christian republican. The women of the democrat party have left us in the cold. I'm happy to have Mace in our corner

"Dont let the perfect be the enemy of the good"

She has her own Giselle Pelicot story. She is naming her ex- fiance and his three business partners for running a sex trafficking ring. She found hundreds of hours of video of drugged women, including herself, being raped and filmed. She's also calling out the criminal negligence of the South Carolina law enforcement apparatus. She just said the South Carolina AG is "not a real man". I've never seen anything like this. It's amazingly feminist, but she's also putting a lot of god and the bible in. I just don't know what to make of this.

I actually posted this in Feminist Videos before I saw this. I think it belongs there as well. She's proposing a ton of new bills related to rape and sex trafficking. Amazing. She thanks Pelicot and JK Rowling.

It's maybe worth remembering that many of the women who went to the mat for women's rights and won crucial victories for us as a class throughout history were similarly religious (I say as a lifelong agnostic/atheist).

I'm guessing her Christian faith was a great source of comfort for her when she was recovering from her abuse. And I can't begrudge her for that

StrawberryCoughFebruary 11, 2025

I don't begrudge her faith at all. I begrudge her preaching from the floor of the House.

Yeah, i am Catholic, and even i think she's putting too much emphasis on the bible. A lot of Jeremiah too, which is one book that is often sited by anti-choicers. I feel she probably does understand it, but it is a lot of cherry picking of verses without context.

There is something I really don't like about using your congressional office to directly target your ex, in an hour-long public speech. I get why she felt she had to, since there were tons of victims, probably still ongoing(!) and the state is protecting these guys. But still, it sets an uncomfortable precedent with this administration in particular.

OwnLyingEyesFebruary 11, 2025

What is the point of getting women into positions of power if we then undermine it as indecorous for them to use it to tackle even something this viscerally misogynistic head-on? And relatedly, is there any daylight visible between when a woman is too vulnerable and marginalized to safely speak out about male abuse of this caliber that she's suffered and when she's seen as abusing her power to do so?

Or more simply, who would benefit by Nancy Mace keeping these secrets?

Exactly! If someone in Mace's position can't get justice, than that doesn't bode well for the rest of us

StrawberryCoughFebruary 11, 2025

I absolutely don't think she should keep it secret.

OwnLyingEyesFebruary 11, 2025

I would argue that until this point the official channels for seeking justice, the system, has practically conspired to keep it a secret, and now she's using the only platform she has to break the silence.

StrawberryCoughFebruary 11, 2025

I absolutely agree. I want this man locked up for the rest of his life, and his assets confiscated and disbursed among his victims.

OnlyHumanFebruary 11, 2025(Edited February 11, 2025)

to directly target your ex

...who happens to also be a serial rapist and a pedophile and is cooperating with other men to do it while enjoying the protection of the law not just doing jack shit but also aggressing victims

momofreyrellaFebruary 11, 2025

Talk about bad takes

pennygadgetFebruary 11, 2025

Normally, I would agree. But she's not just accusing him with zero evidence. She has receipts to back this up.

This isn't just a bitter divorcee trying to use her prominent position to fuck over a cheating ex. This guy is a serial rapist. This is one of the few instances where it is 100% valid for a government official to use their position for personal benefit

OwnLyingEyesFebruary 11, 2025

To add onto this, there's another consideration here: those 'receipts' also take the form of porn existing of a sitting Congressional Representative. Which is the kind of thing that, when a kept secret, can be used to blackmail, manipulate, compromise by whoever else is in on the secret. She just exploded its power to do that by publicly coming out with it ahead of it.

Oof. This is such a good point. Someone as controversial as Mace is a prime target for blackmail. She was smart to get ahead of it so her abusers no longer have that power over her

StrawberryCoughFebruary 11, 2025

Yeah, I agree. This seems like a completely legitimate use of power. I greatly fear that we will see a lot more bible verse-laced condemnations of private individuals coming from the floor of congress in the months to come, and, if so, on much more flimsy evidence. This feels like subverting due process, on the other hand it seems like she was left with no choice, and of course she had to do something.

butchpleaseFebruary 11, 2025

Yes! The bigger problem isn't the serial rapist, but the woman who speaks about him.

StrawberryCoughFebruary 11, 2025

Totally not what I'm saying. The glaringly obvious problem is that she had no other recourse.

butchpleaseFebruary 17, 2025

Okay, I actually get what you're saying with that & apologise for being glib.

StrawberryCoughFebruary 17, 2025

I really appreciate that! Thank you!

""Let the bridges I burn light our way forward." - Nancy Mace

pennygadgetFebruary 11, 2025

I LOVE that line!

AmareldysFebruary 11, 2025

This is being downplayed in the media as her personal vendetta against her ex

OnlyHumanFebruary 11, 2025

Is... is it bad to have a vendetta against someone like that?

AmareldysFebruary 11, 2025

It is not but they are playing it like she is just smearing him

pennygadgetFebruary 11, 2025

No surprise there. The media covered for scrotes like Teddy Kennedy and Bill Clinton. So why wouldn't they cover for a man who raped a woman they despise?
