I loathe Trump but his attempt to block TikTok in the US was the one single thing I wholeheartedly support. Of course the asshole didn't deliver on that either. He couldn't even do one thing right. Then fucking Biden came in and immediately dismantled everything Trump did on this front. Because who cares even if this is exactly what the country should do? Trump Derangement Syndrome is more important so anything Trump does, they must do the opposite even if it is awful for our own people.
For anyone who doesn't know, we have every right to kick Chinese-owned social media out of the USA. The CCP blocked all US social media from China since before 2010. In Mainland China people cannot access FB, Twitter, YT, Insta, Linkedin. . . . none of it. So the Xi and his totalitarian regime has no right to cry foul if other countries kick them out. They never allowed foreign countries to influence or control their own people.

If ByteDance marketed Chinese-style TikTok in the U.S., it would be accused of censorship, no one would use it, and the app would fail. China-haters everywhere would decry its “failure to succeed in a free-market enterprise.”
Alternatively, ByteDance has given foreign countries the version of TikTok that is wildly successful, featuring an algorithm designed to addict, and boosting of vapid and/or controversial content. Now, China is accused of infiltrating Western culture, harming children, spreading disinformation, and many more hysterical conclusions.

the Chinese government doesn't deny that they've taken a real tough crackdown on terrorism - or even deny the detainment of ethnic minority Muslims - I find that interesting because you think that if it was rife with extreme human rights abuse they would be very quiet on it. That's how I came to the conclusion that sometimes innocent people are swept up into that system but it's probably not any worse than US prisons

Tik Tok is Chinese-government malware that's been allowed to operate for far too long as a "legitimate" social media app (social media apps themselves have proven to be dysfunctional and destructive in general, but this is a whole new layer of bad). It is bad not only because of the genderwoo crap but because of the data harvesting being funnelled to the Chinese government. The fact this bill is a bipartisan initiative is encouraging. Though I'm skeptical of either side's ability to overcome the ewwwww factor about shaking hands with people they don't like. Even if it is for the good of the country and, yes, to protect the children.

Because formatting doesn't actually delete anything. All it does is mark the space as free to reuse (trying to explain this in a non technical manner), but what was there before will still be there until something else writes over it. You can find programs that will do this for you and I recommend doing this before disposing of old hard drives.

Windows can do it. You just have to be sure you're doing the proper format. But, a 3rd party program that takes all the guesswork out of the equation might be the right choice for users who are computer illiterate or for users who seem incapable of taking advice from people who do know what they're doing.
That HDD wasn't properly formatted, then. You want to set it to all zeroes to eliminate all data.

It's not necessary if you're just installing a fresh OS. The old data gets flagged for overwrite and is changed whenever the new OS gets round to using that block of storage.
He wasn't it was a laptop he'd been given to thoughly clean for some guy who wanted to sell it, he'd already formatted it before my brother got it, he attached it to his own PC and read the drive and then printed off a personal document from it to show the guy to prove the point.

From what I understand, there is also a crazy difference in the way China allows TikTok to be used - children are not allowed on it during certain hours, and topics such as mathematics and sciences are promoted, for instance.
I'm not praising TikTok or the CCP's authoritarianism, just something I found interesting.
