Greetings and welcome to o/STEM

This is an “everything STEM” circle – science, technology, engineering, maths. This circle has fairly broad coverage for now. In the future some of these subjects may spin off into their own circle – it will depend on interest and number of posts.

.........................................................

We have flairs to sort the topics:

Astronomy
Archaeology
Ask an expert
Biology
Career Q and A
Chemistry
Computing
Earth science
Education
Engineering
Environment
Gadgets
General interest
History
Industry
Physics
Maths
Medicine
Nature
Neuroscience

Technology

Institutions

PLEASE try and write an informative title along with the flair (note, you need to make the post and then choose the flair)

AND add a comment if it's a link post or some text - it lets people know why you have posted, what might be of interest and helps discussion.

..................................................................................................

Links, images, videos, resources, discussion, questions – all welcome – on topic and appropriate to the intent of the circle.

.................................................................................................

NOTE: Medicine – any medical topic (including covid19) needs to be based on scientific principles, and primarily about the science, not the politics. This is also not the place for health/diet lifestyle/ alternative medicine/therapy or general psychology (hopefully these topics will have their own circle at some point if people are interested)

For all topics: no conspiracy theories, no quackery, no spamming.

Thank you, and enjoy !

Yay! As well as our own experiences, I assume we can post stuff about notable women in STEM, and interesting news articles to discuss, whether female-related or not?

Hooray! Long overdue, thank you very much for starting it.

Hope to be of help here eventually.

This is awesome! I'm looking forward to the posts in this circle :)

Can you add a flair for net neutrality and online protection?

We don't want to have too many separate flairs so that would come under computing, or possibly ask an expert (this can cover pple offering info as well as asking for info). As long as the title is informative.

But note, this is not a politics circle so posts need to be fundamentally about the sci/tech/E/M behind the topic rather than other related issues.

I plan to make copious resources about this

Maybe useful in that case to make a couple of ongoing threads for this and add to them as you go along. So for example you could make

[computing] Net neutrality master post

and

[ask an expert] Staying safe online master post

I can then link the threads from within the wiki and this would be a better resource for people to use, available and easy to find, rather than having loads of separate posts to search for.

You've given me an idea to maybe make my own wiki project. Open source = open love

For women in STEM fields, is this a place to discuss career related topics? Like job changes, sexism in the male-dominated stem workplace, etc?

It seems a bit tangential to your topic list so wanted to make sure. :)

We do have a [career Q&A] flair, so even though the sub in general is for the subject areas covered by STEM and not for politics, this flair will be slightly different in that workplace issues are about the social and political aspects - so yes, career related topics are fine.
