I hope that this is the right circle for this.
I've heard that for a lot of women, the vaccination causes changes in their cycles, as in, their flow starts earlier, is heavier, and so on. Does anyone have a medical explanation for that? What do the vaccines do to cause it?
I’m post-menopausal and use a hormone patch. I hadn’t had a hot flash in months but a few days after the vaccination I had them continuously for an entire day. I just assumed my system was stressed with the antibody response. I know that sometimes when I’m sick or stressed it’ll bring on hot flashes.
I get them on the daily and whatever it's my life now.
Then I had my shot and a couple days later - omg I thought I was dying, sweated through two sets of sheets in three hours. That happened again the next night. Then it settled back to its normal pattern.
I'm sure my immune system did that.
This is a good article I think: https://www.today.com/health/can-covid-vaccines-impact-periods-experts-discuss-t214499
My summary: Yes, many women have self-reported changes in menstrual cycle after vaccination. It is not known why; likely another case of medical research assuming male as default. Speculation is the cause are the antibodies created as a result of the vaccine. There are studies that show a link between estrogen and COVID (the infection not the vaccine), men have worse outcomes, and 20-25% of women have changes in their menses.
Thanks!
I knew that Covid tended to affec men worse than women, and I always wondered why. For me, with no background in science or medicine, it's interesting to see how infections and then vaccinations can cause such changes everywhere in your body.
It’s not quite true to say Covid affects men worse than women - it’s more complicated than that.
If men get Covid, they are more likely to get it severely, and relatively briefly.
Women who catch the virus run a greater risk of developing Long Covid - which can also be severe - and be ill for at least 3 months, often a lot longer. (Some Long Haulers have been ill for over a year and are still not recovered.)
Among women with Long Covid, menstrual changes and problems are common.
Some women have more frequent and/or heavier periods.
Some women have the opposite.
Some young women develop menopausal symptoms.
Some older women who have past the menopause have periods or period pains.
It is interesting - and concerning, imo - that the vaccine is also causing menstrual changes.
Fuck I didn’t even think about that. I have to make sure I get my jab after my period then.
At the simplest level it's probably the same as when you get a cold or another bug. The immune system, and possibly "stress", affects our hormonal cycle (and vice versa), and some women are more sensitive to it than others. It will also depend on what point in the cycle that the jab is given.
(PS I have flaired your post but you can DIY from the menus under the post title)
Thanks for flairing it.
It's one of these instances where apparently, side effects that affect only females were once again overlooked. I just hope it doesn't affect early stadium pregnancies in a negative way. One miscarriage, and conservatives and anti-vaxxers will have a field day.
