I’m glad they’re serious about getting this thing cleaned up, if they’re actually able to pull it off by 2040 that would be huge. The entire patch is ~176,000,000 lbs and 620,000 square miles, I can’t even wrap my head around that.

Wonderful! Folks don't talk about it enough, but waste management is truly one of the most important jobs in our world.

Is it just me who sometimes seethes quietly over stories like this? I feel like they're always shared as this "Look what ANYONE can do!" Type of story, almost meant to shame people who aren't doing it? Yet usually out of frame, there is a very wealthy family supporting their child, one or multiple parents who are professors or well-connected, or some other large advantage that is never discussed.

I don't know - I think I get compassion fatigue. We are made to feel like so many things are our fault, when they aren't - and there are so many people getting grants etc for reasons that aren't immediately obvious.

I'm very willing to admit this may be a sour grapes view, though. And obviously I am happy this is happening.

I’m just glad this thing even exists. I don’t care who made it. I would never come up with it because it’s not my field.

This is such great news. Of fucking course the robot needed to clean up this mess created primarily by short-sighted and destructive greedy males is given a woman's name.... But I am happy to hope the ocean might rebound in my lifetime.

As happy as this makes me, it's virtually nothing compared to the total.
