Advice neededIrrelevance bias
Posted February 10, 2022 by real_feminist in STEM

I repeatedly experience people thinking that my prior work is 'niche' and therefore irrelevant to other positions. It's true that my prior work was niche, but the skills are incredibly applicable to other roles. I get the impression that people see the transferability of men's skills more. Sometimes hiring managers decide that I'm unqualified because I wouldn't be doing the exact same thing that I was doing before even though it sounds like it would use all the same skills (and easier than what I was doing). Other hiring managers have tried to argue that I need to be started at a lower level for the same reasons.

Is there a name for this bias? It feels similar to prove-it-again, but is there another more specific name?

Does anyone have any resources that explain this?
