During Christmas season I like watching American Xmas movies and Danica McKellar is starring in a couple of them. When I tried to find out more about her recently I was quite surprised to find that she is a mathematician, too. Her name is included in the "Chayes–McKellar–Winn theorem". She has also written a couple of books to make girls become more interested in mathematics. In an interview she said that she wrote a particular book "to show girls that math is accessible and relevant, and even a little glamorous" and to counteract "damaging social messages telling young girls that math and science aren't for them". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danica_McKellar
I've gone through the books she has written and passed them along to girls approaching middle and high school math. She does a great job explaining the math.
I grew up with a huge crush on Winnie Cooper. And all these years later Danica has my heart and respect in so many ways. Love to see such a childhood icon go on to be an inspiration to young women and girls.
What a talented woman! So wonderful to see!
Small nitpick: the titles of her books have a certain sexual whiff (kiss my math, hot x, etc). Probably someone else titled them like that. It’s as if they’re implying that the mathematics has to be wrapped in some sexy packaging because otherwise girls wouldn’t pay attention.
