Laurel Hubbard bombs out of the Olympic weightlifting comp. He didn't achieve any of his nominated snatch lifts. He failed all three attempts and is DNF.

If you fail your snatch attempts, you can't continue in the competition, so he's out of the Olympics.

On one hand I'm happy he failed miserably. He's a foul cheater and doesn't deserve any success in the women's division.

On the other hand, the fact he did so poorly will be used as evidence by TRAs that TIMs don't have a physical advantage over women (ignoring the fact this dude is 43 years old).

THe infuriating thing is that it doesn' t matter one bit if men have advantages or not.

Women were barred from competing in sports not because they called themselves women or because they wore gowns and make-up or because they had a womanly identity, they were because they were female. SO even if men didn' t have an advantage, they never had issues with competing in official sport events. Allowing even one of them is completely desrespectful and just shits on women' s accomplishment and struggles.

[–] NotCis 32 points (+32|-0)

Yeah, he blocked other women from qualifying. It’s still fucked up.

[–] Jack_the_Lass 27 points (+27|-0)

ignoring the fact this dude is 43 years old

and recently broke his arm. any woman would be totally finished by that alone.

[–] Ronja 11 points (+11|-0)

And to that we would counter with the fact that he could very well have done that on purpose and we will never know the truth. Running slower, lifting less, not giving your all are tactics readily available for someone who has no scruples manipulating results. He might even have been told to not do his best, since the trans lobby must have seen were this was headed. Global outrage, mass-peaking and more power to our cause.

[–] redawn 11 points (+11|-0)

win, lose or draw...the important thing to remember is he displaced a she.

[–] Dryad 111 points (+111|-0)

Watching him lift was disgusting. The male pattern baldness, the fact he, an entire man was competing with women, the fawning of the commentators. It makes me so unbelievably angry. Fuck him. Fuck New Zealand for supporting him and his mediocre maleness.

[–] HildegardVonBees 67 points (+67|-0)

His technique was so much worse than any of the other competitors. An athlete of that level of skill does not deserve to be at the Olympics.

[–] Dryad 52 points (+52|-0)

And his age! Middle age man competing against young women with far more skill and technique.

[–] shewolfoffrance 23 points (+23|-0)

I've read the same thing about Cece Telfer, which makes the "just train harder" line so galling.

[–] bumpyjerboa 14 points (+14|-0)

I know little more than nothing about lifting and the pictures of him failing looked like terrible form, like he just chucked the weights away when he couldn't make it. Wouldn't that get you banned from like, Planet Fitness?

[–] Freshxx 7 points (+7|-0) Edited

Tbf that is expected in Olympic lifts. You only need to lift the weight, a "controlled drop" is acceptable in this type of competition. The release aside, yes his form was terrible.

[–] Ash94 17 points (+17|-0) Edited

He looked severely unfit as well. It was horrifying to witness.

[–] HildegardVonBees 85 points (+85|-0)

His statement (https://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/58054891):

"I'm not entirely unaware of the controversy which surrounds my participation at these Games," said Hubbard after her exit.

"And as such, I would particularly like to thank the IOC, for I think really affirming its commitment to the principles of Olympism and establishing that sport is something for all people, that it is inclusive and is accessible."

The Olympics are not meant to be inclusive or accessible. That is the whole point of the elite level of competition.

[–] TheRoyalJesterf 52 points (+52|-0)

If it’s “inclusive” and “accessible” for all, I guess there’s no need for medals anymore? Or we all get gold, even those of us watching at home? What a bullshit statement.

[+] [Deleted] 37 points (+37|-0)
[–] hedy 26 points (+26|-0)

Accessible? Accessible? Think athletes who train their whole lives to qualify and don't take 15-year breaks find competing in the games accessible? Ask the woman whose place you took what she thinks.

The utter lack of concern for literally anyone else.

[–] KanaChameleon 23 points (+23|-0)

One thing is right, sport is something for all people.... he just misses the crucial caveat that it should be in the right and fair sex class or weight division. He just is going to hand-wave over that.

[–] YpsiRadFem 17 points (+17|-0)

The Paralympics are inclusive and accessible -- for people who qualify for the Paralympics.

[–] Finaphoza 5 points (+5|-0) Edited

Imagine him entering the paralympics as an amputee after SRS.

[–] disabledfem 16 points (+16|-0)

Accessible? Don't you dare bring the disabled into it, Hubbard. We have our own separate events, as you should. Autogynephile division perhaps.

What everyone needs to focus on is not his performance, but the fact that he STOLE A WOMAN'S SPOT in the competition. And that is ultimately the issue with TIMs in women's sports (along with the physical danger they pose in high-contact sports).

[–] Shinyowl 5 points (+5|-0)

This is exactly true. Some deserving woman was unable to compete in the Olympics because of this stupid ass.

[–] [Deleted] 46 points (+46|-0)
[–] Lilim 50 points (+50|-0)

I’m both disgusted by this picture and laughing my ass off because goddamn do these men ever live up to the stereotypes.

Thank goodness for the covid restrictions so he’s not running around Tokyo city harassing women and treating them like potential anime waifus.

[–] Omina_Sentenziosa 15 points (+15|-0)

LOL, it' s more likely that he wants to be treated as an anime waifu.

[–] [Deleted] 22 points (+22|-0)

Disgusting. Grown men acting like caricatures of small girls. It's just disgusting.

[–] Tq231442 9 points (+9|-0)

They always want to be "cute" like baby girls. How are they so creepy and repulsive

[–] morethanafeeling 44 points (+44|-0)

So, will people use that as a reason to say TIMs don't have an advantage over women?

[–] Danu 34 points (+34|-0) Edited

I've seen commentators mention that he just had too much pressure poor baby uwu

[–] Jade 19 points (+19|-0)

Yes, poor him, so much pressure, being the only / first / whatever TIM in the Olympics. It's only fair that for his comfort and well-being a category is created exclusively for trans people, so that he can be more at ease. #transrights

[–] YpsiRadFem 9 points (+9|-0)

Except he's not. The first. The archer bombed out, too. And whatever happened to TIM Abreu on the Brazilian volleyball team?

[–] hedy 4 points (+4|-0)

I doubt he would qualify on a trans team if that team included younger TIMs. And I sense that even he knows that men who call themselves women are still men, and doesn't want to compete against them.

[–] Ishahchai 8 points (+8|-0)

Oh, maybe he should have gotten another media injunction so he could focus on the Olympics again. I mean, he’s treating women with the exact same respect he gave toward that elderly couple he rammed his car into.

[–] Womenareterfs 27 points (+28|-1)

That’s what I’m afraid of. It’d be better if he won a medal.

[–] ajaxboots 26 points (+29|-3)

Yeah, that's started already on our local nz subreddit. The very online activists are saying "see, no advantage".

For what it's worth, that doesn't represent NZs general sentiment (the main sub is of course captured by gender ideology), many see it as unfair, but of course many stay pretty quiet.

Ive been reminding people that there arent any 43 year old woman competing alongside Hubbard, which tells you everything.

(First post here, have been browsing for a year but finally request an invite, because I think reality is important. I'm male, so won't intrude too much, but grateful to be here)

[–] TheRoyalJesterf 12 points (+12|-0)

It’s already all over Twitter. Just as we all predicted forever ago.

Could someone from NZ please share the name of that young woman who would have gone to the Olympics if the notorious cheat Laurel Gavin Hubbard hadn't been advanced?

I think it's so important we raise her up as much as we can, but I'm having a hard time finding her via Google!

[–] radically_done 42 points (+42|-0)

The other poster neglected to mention Tracey Lambrechs, a NZ woman who lost her spot on the team to this cheat. Tracey was told that she would have to switch weight classes or retire, because she could not compete against Hubbard. She dropped a lot of weight very quickly to try and stay in, but ended up retiring.

Awful.

[–] HildegardVonBees 22 points (+23|-1)

Tracey Lambrechs also lost all of her weightlifting records to Hubbard once he started competing. Bumped out of the record books, just like that.

[–] Liandra 12 points (+12|-0)

I did not know about Tracey, thanks for bringing her name in, so we can think of her as well!

[–] Liandra 22 points (+22|-0)

She is competing, Nini Manumua.

[–] Jade 16 points (+16|-0)

Nini Manumua

Oh wow, Polynesian, on top. Way to be inclusive, removing a Polynesian woman to accommodate a white man.

Glad she's competing.

[–] TerfSedai 7 points (+7|-0)

Oh awesome, really glad to hear that! Thank you for the link!

It's basically impossible to get any non-America-centric news on the front page of any major media outlet in the states...🤦‍♀️

[–] Every-Man-His-Own-Football 14 points (+14|-0) Edited

There would have been a 14th woman competing if not for Gavin Hubbard. I'm not sure who though because I don't really understand the qualification system. I think Manumua would have gotten the spot for Oceania wangled by Hubbard and then a different woman would have been selected by the Tripartite Commission, not necessarily from Oceania.

According to Fair Play for Women, Roviel Detenamo of Nauru, a Pacific Island, is not there at the Olympics because of Mr Gavin Hubbard https://fairplayforwomen.com/women-are-losing-their-olympic-dreams/

Anyone who is worried about this being used as "evidence", please see some of the actual peer reviewed and statistical evidence, and make sure to point this out to anyone who claims this one person proved science wrong:

Right? We didn’t need him to prove males have a sporting advantage.

I like to look at it that he’s shown that men with bad technique don’t belong in the women’s olympics.

[–] Bonolenov 21 points (+21|-0)

I wish I felt good about this but I don’t. He still blocked out a real woman from the competition. It’s all so unfair..

[–] Althea 19 points (+19|-0)

It was downright embarrassing watching him compete. Good news for his competitors, though!
