Follow user feature

I'd like the ability to follow certain users the way you can on other sites.

I'd like that too- but also for that to not be available for public viewing. There are certain ladies I'd like to follow/be friends with on here but I obviously don't want them being attacked by the Chapo Chat/gender cynical weirdos.

Ya i'm fine with it being private. Might be good if users can see WHO is following THEM though.

Might be necessary to see who is following, even for private users; and a block feature might be necessary, too. "Following" opens up an easier avenue for abuse, if comment notifications are permitted. For example, most of my comments attract between 1 and 3 downvotes after a few days, no matter what they say, because some group's hobby for a few weeks seems to have been looking through my comment history (even aaaaancient ones!) and downvoting. I don't particularly mind, but I'm pretty sure that that sort of thing would have a chilling effect on others' speech, making them feel unwanted and perhaps even driving them off the platform. It's currently a manual process for people to see comments and then click on the permalink and then downvote, but comment notifications would make it far easier to scale up and, hence, far easier to dogpile on someone. The danger of this increases as Ovarit comes closer to an open, non-invite system.

lol, i forget that these losers have no life outside the internet.

No, his case is different, and it's because the majority of us don't want men here. His downvotes are probably the most legitimate use of the button: denoting his posts as irrelevant to the discussion. Because imo, they are.

I mean, I'm downvoting and commenting on a three week old post right now while I dive down the rabbit hole to see why he's here. This kind of obfuscating "wah I don't understand why they don't like me", women-blaming stuff only strengthens my view on it.

I rather think this serves to make my point. Ovarit is not only for women, but instead is woman-centered and has women-only circles. I have never, to my knowledge, broken the rules of the site, and have tried to contribute constructively; yet there is a group that, claiming to represent the majority, wishes for me to go away. The critical point is this: the content of my comments is largely irrelevant to this group. It is the fact of who I am that causes them to downvote. This is why a "Following" mechanism requires careful implementation to ensure that it does not make abuse easier: there may also be those who wish to push away "Trump voters" or "Muslims" or "Socialists" and so on. Circumscription of permitted participation that is within the rules of a community leads, slowly but inevitably, to an echo-chamber.

I understand well why I'm being downvoted, but out of courtesy I didn't want to cast aspersions on others. It's nevertheless their free time to spend as they wish!

Whatever dude. I'm really not interested in hearing anything you have to say. And yeah, it's based on who you are because ideas don't just materialise out of a vacuum. It's telling that you think a truly women-only platform could only be an echo-chamber.

edit: that is a serious reach, extrapolating your situation to relate to Muslim women. Sheesh.

That's not what I said, but I'll just leave it at that. Wishing you the best, nevertheless.

Same.

Can you elaborate on what this would be like? What would happen after you "followed" a user?

[Deleted]December 29, 2020

The idea is that basically I'd get a notification each time I log in that tells me if someone I follow has posted something since I last logged in. That way I don't have to go round and manually check each user that I like to see if she's posted anything new.

What if you got notifications when that user made a comment or post?
