Ovarit Monthly Charity Project

(I posted this as a reply somewhere, and thought it belonged here too, fleshed out a bit.)

What I would really like to see, are community charity projects. We decide on a monthly goal such as:

  • Pay for a woman/group of women to start a business
  • Cover the rent or buy supplies for a womens' shelter
  • Buy a solar panel(s) for a woman's eco house or farm
  • Pay school fees for a girl whose family can't afford it

Then we fundraise, advertise, donate and hopefully reach the goal by the month's end.

The focus would be on developing countries. Money goes a lot further there. I have nothing against big Western charities like Vancouver Rape Relief, LGB Alliance and such, but... well, they're big, well-known and receive thousands in donations already. I'd rather focus on small, humble projects that make immediate differences to womens' lives, and would otherwise get overlooked.

We would need to find out about these struggling women/groups somehow, and ideally find a local trustworthy charity to handle the donations and ensure the women are helped.

I'm not sure how wealthy most members here are. A goal of $100 - $500 per project seems like a good range. When Ovarit grows bigger we could tackle larger goals, $1000 or so.

What do you think? Would it be patronising? Too difficult to organise?

Update: girl_undone has explained why it wouldn't work as an official Ovarit campaign. I agree with her reasons. It might be best for interested women to organise this ourselves, privately, to avoid any GC outing or TRA harrassment. Some kind of anonymous forum?
