I've found myself upvoting and then un-upvoting the same comment multiple times because I have a hard time distinguishing between the the black caret symbol and the purple caret symbol, especially when my mouse is no longer over it and it stops being bold.

I think a possible solution could be keeping the caret symbols bold, changing them from carets to triangles, or making more of a distinction between the two colors.
