extend the amount of time before a post is archived
Posted January 8, 2022 by fizzlebomber in Suggestions

i'm not sure what exactly the cut off is, but it seems as though posts/comments are archived after only a few months? what's the reason for this?

of course posts in the larger circles won't have much visibility after a few weeks, but some circles move very slowly & would benefit from further activity. for example, most of the posts on the front page of THIS circle are archived

my suggestion would be to extend the window to at least six months, if not a year. or at least make it circle specific

I really like the way saidit handles this, although I don't know if it would be possible to code over here. Posts are never archived, and there's a browse-by-comment feature in addition to the standard browse-by-post feature that shows comments either from /subscribed or /all depending on where you navigate from, listed from newest to oldest. So if you're so inclined, you can comment on an ancient post and it will still get noticed by anyone who's browsing from the comments tab.

Anyway, yes, I agree with you and am glad you brought it up. If posts must be archived at all I'd like it to be at 12 months.

Yes, please. 3 months is very short compared to Reddit. It's 6 months over there.

The reason is because old threads don't tend to get activity on platforms like this, and when they do it's often because someone wants to harass someone in particular (that's something we saw a lot on reddit in old threads). No one is looking, so someone goes in and is a jerk to someone, that person gets notified of the response but otherwise they're basically having a private conversation.

You can make a new post about an old topic - it's actually preferred.
