One of the (few) things that works on Reddit is the volunteer transcription service, based out of r/TranscribersOfReddit.

/r/TranscribersOfReddit (ToR) is a subreddit dedicated to organizing volunteers to write transcriptions of image, audio, and video posts to other subreddits. Our volunteers turn currently inaccessible content - content that can’t be enjoyed by some portion of the population - into an accessible format in the comments of the post.

So when a volunteer types out the text from an image of text, like a Twitter screenshot, or transcribes the audio from a video, or provides a written description of a gif. This benefits visually-impaired people who use screen readers, deaf or hard-of-hearing people who need captions, and people with crappy internet connections that won't load an image.

The way the subreddit works is that non-text posts from a limited number of subs which reach a certain popularity threshold are cross-posted by a bot to r/TOR and then claimed by a volunteer transcriber, who posts the transcription to the original post in a comment.

Is this something we could implement here? I'm happy to put time in to get it working.

I have started transcribing posts! Mostly in o/Radfemmery so far. If you would like to join in, I am using the formats originated by r/TranscribersOfReddit, which can be found right here, though I personally am knocking off the 'here's what we do and why!' in tiny font at the end of each template because it links to a non-Ovarit site.
