So, I was struggling to find a title for this post, as this is not really about the TV show that I'm going to quote, but rather about something they did there which does not happen nearly often enough.
On ovarit we've discussed multiple times before how men in history — may they be famous artists or scientists or anyone else deemed a "genius" in mainstream — hardly ever get called out on their treatment of women and girls. Because people, in particular men, just don't want to hear that. Takes all the fun out of idolizing these guys, doesn't it?
I was recently re-watching season 2 of Ted Lasso and there was this one exchange I had almost forgotten about. And I appreciated it all over again.
The context is that this is a show about an English Premiere League Football team, and two characters are discussing the two star strikers on that team:
Nate: You see, Jamie and Dani are like Picasso and Gauguin.
Colin: Pedophiles?
Nate: Artists, they're artists.
That was it, more of a throwaway line, sure, but it was there, and unexpectedly so.
This happens so infrequently, I thought maybe others here would appreciate it as well. (Kudos to whoever came up with it in the writers room.)
I'd love to hear other examples if others here can think of any. :)
