SpoilerBarry finale - Fuches, Hank and Sally
Posted June 4, 2023 by kahnradosho in Television

I want to preface this by saying I love that we have a television circle because the tv sub “discussions” on Reddit are so boring and predictable (i.e. omg I love everything about a show + let’s beat to death this one liner).

I finished Barry last night and I have mixed feelings about it. I think the show for the most part was really strong and I think throughout the show the depiction of violence has been very grounded and not glorified. Some of the episodes are also beautifully shot. None of the characters are particularly likable (except for Noho Hank, who is also problematic but probably the least narcissistic out of all of them) and most of them are consistently awful even until the very end.

Anyway, I want to talk mostly about the finale (spoilers galore here). What I don’t get is what happens with Fuches at the end — does he hand over John to Barry because all of his men are dead or injured and he can’t possibly win a fight against Barry on his own, or did he do it out of some kind of sudden self-actualization? I honestly thought it was the former but everyone on Reddit is convinced it’s the latter.

I also haven’t read from any of the discussions on Reddit talking about Hank’s refusal to hand over John to Fuches at the end, which I think is very consistent with his character (Hank is the most “genuinely good” character in the show despite being a gangster who has made bad decisions).

And finally, I haven’t seen much discussion about how Sally is completely awful on Reddit. She is like the ultimate narcissist — her relationship with Barry is mutually abusive and she is an AWFUL mother. In the end before John leaves with his friend, he tells her that he loves her and all she can say is, “was the show good?” She doesn’t grow at all even though something like 15 years have passed since we first see her character.

Anyway, I just want to hear what some of you ladies think about the show or what you got out of it. Overall I enjoyed it, though I think season 4 was probably the weakest.
