I wanted to post this as a link, but wanted to make a note on why I’m adding it to this circle — given that popular shows like Fleabag and Baby Reindeer got their start at Edinburg Fringe, I can see this play making it on TV depending on how it goes. I did a quick read (it’s late) and saw that it’s 1) written by a gay man and 2) supposed to be a “balanced” take on the gender critical movement and JKRs involvement in it. I’m going to research more about who is involved tomorrow but curious to get y’all’s initial thoughts.
Is it me or is writing a fictional play about living people (without asking for their consent) kinda weird?
Based on a copy of the script obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, those scenes depict three moments in which Rowling — portrayed as strong-willed and sharp-tongued but far from a villain — faces off with key male figures from her life: her first book editor, her abusive ex-husband and her father.
Yes, let's write a fictionalised account of a woman's abuse for entertainment and lulz. It's not like women are real people anyway.
Unfortunately, there is going to be nothing "balanced" about this baloney. It's some scrote's fantasy of forcing Rowling through a struggle session until she bows to the girldick and renounces her meaniehead ways.
There's been some discussion about it in other circles already, including this recent thread: https://ovarit.com/o/GoodNewsForWomen/566987/scores-of-actresses-turn-down-roles-in-play-critical-of-jk-rowlings-gender-views
Well the working title for it was TERF C*nt and they are (or at least were) having trouble finding women to act in it.... So I highly doubt it will be a "balanced take." I've heard it's staged like some kind of intervention for JK?
Bit I guess I'll reserve full judgement for when it comes out.
Rowling is SO CONTROVERSIAL. I mean, she’s a woman and she can define woman and it’s a definition used by humanity for all of recorded history. The absolute GALL.
I fervently hope that this bullshit halts the careers of everyone involved.
Ah yes, TERF CU**, just a nice balanced "exploration of how J.K developed her rigid views on gender"
Sounds totally unbiased.
This fool is publicly begging JK to go see it.
My only thoughts, other than how obviously incredibly biased po mo neo lib leftist cult mantra fodder this play will be, is, I mean, whatever? Let them? It may be a huge flop because people are finally over this garish trend or maybe it will be a huge hit because the unwashed masses love them some greasy fast food dinner theater and the hyper consumerist queer corporate conglom is still digging its heels in hard right now. Ok. Cool. Let them saturate their market with their subpar smut and enjoy it too. I'm sure they will love it, the bar is not high. The rest of us can just be like JK assuredly will be in response to this literal farce, and just not. Not go, not care at all, (or not take it, she might have a lawsuit, JK don't play) not stop making our own content and community, not stream services that choose and celebrate hateful delusional content. Not much you can do about shit culture except try to create an alternative.
I hope this play will bomb and everyone participating will have their career tanked. I simply cannot believe there are enough people who are rabid enough TRAs to watch a whole play about hating a single woman. Who thinks 'ah yes this sounds like a great evening's entertainment'?
I don’t know if it will even be shown at the fringe. Last I heard he was having a difficult time finding women to fill the roles. And fringe is about a month away. It hard to rehearse and put on a play in less than a month.
I read the article too and thought it was a tad weird that the author felt the need to mention the guy who wrote the play is gay....his sexual orientation is irrelevant imo; he's still a dude regardless.
I don’t know about libel/slander laws in Britain, but the play, including the use of the C word, sounds like a sure fire lawsuit. JKR is a public figure, but she should be protected from the totally insane TRAs and a slanderous play. If trans people are protected, so should she be protected.
A play written by a man... about women's rights, thoughts and feelings.
