Hullo there
I'm currently rewatching the original L Word series, what a truckload of nostalgia. I feel like I'm revisiting old friends.
I watched a few episodes of the Generation Q reboot, but I wasn't really feeling it (didn't care about any of the new characters in the slightest). I'm wondering if I should give it another go and watch all of it, or if season 2 is any better? Basically, how bad is the trans stuff, so help me God does Shane go out with a TIM??! (don't care about spoilers).
Thank you in advance!
It's garbage but worth it for one couple.... ;)
Which one? Dani and her GF were our favs. I could see Bette and the artist being someone else's fav though.
Gigi and Dani were beyond doubt a highlight... Gigi is a dyke spirit animal. Much of the energy from the show comes from the culture of watch parties where women come together with their hot takes on the show, no matter how bad the writing is :)) I like bette and pippa too... too long on toxic tibette drama
Gigi! Thank you, I couldn't remember her characters name. OMFG Gigi is smoooookkking hot. She makes me just a puddle of lesbian.
I will never get tired of the OG series. Yes, it was ridiculous in many ways but it's still fun to watch and I recall fondly the watch nights in my friend's living room. How the L Word would be playing on TVs at lesbian bars, back when lesbian bars were much easier to find. I
I was a fan of the original series and I even watched the Real L Word, but I just can't bring myself to watch Gen Q.
I am listening to the Autostraddle recap podcast, though.
My wife and I hate watched it. Season 2 the only characters I really like were Dani and her Iranian-American girlfriend (can't remember her name).
The wokeness is insufferable.
One of the character is played by super obvious TIM despite not being a TIM character on the show. So we are supposed to pretend not to see the man or something. The is also a 'gay' TIF trying to date a gay man and Bette's daughter wants to date another TIM (but we are supposed to pretend she is interested in girl). I watched the first season and skipped over all the trans scenes and it was okay if you do that.
And in the second season, another lesbian goes poly with a TIM and then there's Shane and Tess. It's incredible how many gay people are paired with TIFs and TIMs on this show.
I actually didn't know Jamie was trans for much of season 1 until I looked up the actor
I don't understand the downvotes here. I thought the showed effectively "passed" him pretty well. There is a lot you can do with lighting and camera angles. Doesn't mean IRL you wouldn't notice the hips to shoulders ratio or something. My wife clocked him based on the voice, but again, I think the magic of cinema did wonders for him.
Thank you! I actually thought Jamie's voice was sexy lol. I'm happy they decided to make the character non-trans. Honestly, the writing was what made the couple un-convincing. I liked Tess in season 1 but season 2 wasn't very believable
I also think all that matters is how convincing a character is. Most of the lezziest favorite characters on the show are played by straight women...
Yes, but straight women are still women and Jamie Clayton is not. It's offensive to cast a man in a role for a lesbian (or in a role for any woman, for that matter). Jamie Clayton does not make a convincing lesbian. It's lesbophobic to put lesbian characters in sex/romance scenes with men, and the show has done it multiple times now.
Meh, by the same logic you could say its lesbophobic to have straight women play lesbian roles (I disagree). Again, I didn't know Jamie was trans until I looked up the actor (same with the actor who played Jordi), so in my mind the lesbian part was believable
Regardless of sex/sexuality, any sex scene can be uncomfortable for actors. I remember Kate (plays Shane) mentioning on a podcast that sometimes it sucked for her on the L Word because due to Shane's character she also had the initimate scenes with extras who would come in for a day, when you barely even know the person.
The main crime of this show is the terrible writing
Yes, unfortunately they pair Shane with a TIM. It's disgusting and it made me quit the show. I could see the writing on the wall in the very first episode of season 2 and that was enough for me. I knew I wouldn't be able to stomach seeing my favorite character, such an important lesbian character, being paired up with a TIM. The showrunner can claim that the TIM's character is "cis" on the show all she wants, but it's impossible to believe. There also are a ton of other trans characters and actors on the show, and as the "GQ" subtitle suggests, it's far more queer than the original show.
I've been a huge fan of TLW, flaws and all, for years and it meant a lot to me, and I never would've imagined that I'd ever quit a revival of it, but I just had to. There were too many things I didn't like about it, the showrunner is awful and hostile toward lesbians, the show no longer is a lesbian show or seems proud of lesbians, and it's just badly written and unappealing. It's sad and disgusting what's happened to TLW, and what frustrates me further is how so few people are talking about how disappointing it is. Critics and fans have written negatively about it in terms of its storytelling, yes, but aside from Ovarit and a couple of other anonymous sites I haven't seen it get the backlash it deserves for its lesbophobia.
