After a long TV hiatus I have finally decided to start watching again for a bit. It wasn’t for any exact reason other than it can be a time sink and I wanted to do other things, but I’m currently on a saving money journey for a bit and 🏴☠️ some shows is one of the ways I can keep my costs down.
Currently just started Cinderella After 2AM, a Korean drama about a working class young woman who gets paid to dump her boyfriend, a bribe from his rich mom.
I also discovered how much I LOVE watching TV when the sound comes through my noise cancelling headphones. A way more pleasant experience than traditional viewing without for me, especially because my apartment complex can be noisy sometimes.
If anyone has any Korean dramas they rec, I would love to hear about them.
Forgot to add in at first that I still want to know what you’re watching even if it’s not Korean, that just happens to be my jam right now!
This isn't a Korean drama, but ....I just started watching THE BLETCHLEY CIRCLE on amazon prime, it is a wonderful women-centered series. If you enjoyed CALL THE MIDWIFE you may also like this.
Here is a nyt review: https://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/20/arts/television/the-bletchley-circle-on-pbs.html
I'm reading about Bletchly Park (?) right now, it's so interesting. Thanks for the tip! I want to watch this, and it's affordable!
I loved:
Crash Landing on You
Coffee Prince
Dear My Friends
Goblin
Crash landing on you is somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine - the storyline is so over the top ! I was in love with all the secondary characters/North Korean soldiers.
The soldiers were great, weren't they? Compelling and heartwarming personalities. I liked the women in the village as well. Lots of fun dynamics there.
We're rewatching Blue Eye Samurai atm. It's gory, but a really fun watch otherwise.
We're in the middle of Scavenger's Reign, an animated scifi that's really quite mind blowing.
Bakeoff has started, and it's a promising season. Alison Hammond is such a breath of fresh air after Creepy Uncle Fester's seasons.
Looking forward to the new season of Severance.
I was planning on watching Rings of Power. I mean, last season was problematic, but it was still a fun watch. I've read a lot of bad things about this season, so I'm not sure I want to waste the money.
How's the Wheel of Time these days? I've only seen the first season, but I loved it. Rosamund Pike is so gorgeous.
Scavengers Reign is awesome! I am absolutely in awe of the artists' and writers' creativity. I love all the creatures on Vesta!
Rings of Power S2 is resoundingly 'meh' as expected. It looks nice but the substantive scenes are too far apart. It made me feel emotions for Celebrimbor by purely it own merit (since I haven't read the books) so that's an improvement over S1.
I'm a huge Tolkien nerd, and get upset when programs deviate from his writing. I get how ridiculous it is as it's all made up in the first place, but I still hate it when they deviate from the "real" story.
Also, I hate it that Gil-Galad in Rings of Power is the pure embodiment of an aging high school football star turned used car salesman. In fact, a lot of their casting sucks when it comes to the elves. The actress playing Galadriel is pretty amazing though.
Totally agree with you about the elves. I was convinced Gil-Galad was Matt Berry for a hot minute since I only saw him in armor at first, having missed an episode, and if they were intending to go for goofy Chad bro-elf I wish they had hired Berry.
Watching High Potential - A single mum with the deductive powers of Sherlock Holmes, its quite good but only two episodes in so far. Also Slow Horses - Great cast, on season 4.
Oooo, I might be able to help you - I have only watched Korean movies/dramas for the past two years (got tired with western scripts) :
One dollar lawyer - you laugh, you cry, and then they make you laugh again. Actors are stellar - all of them. Story of an ex-prosecutor turned lawyer who takes on cases for only 1000 wons (around 1 dollar). The story is way deeper than that, but I can't summarize it.
Reply 1988- Story of a few families living in the same neighborhood. Got to go past the first/second episode as it is very dense. Then, it's just perfect. Love all the characters. So well written
Escape from Mogadischu - movie based on true story of how ambassy workers (both North Korea and South Korea) tried to escape Mogadischu as civil war broke out. I was RI-VE-TED. One of the best historical/action movie I have ever seen. Actually cried at the end, for both parties involved.
Be melodramatic - slice of life with my favorite actress JEON YEO-BEEN. The story revolves around women living together.
I have more, but I don't want to spam :D Hope you find something you like
I am currently watching Mama Cake (2024) - a Mexican comedy about an elderly woman who bakes cakes with a special touch. It's a bit silly sometimes, but I find it really funny.
Nothing has caught my attention for quite a while so looking forward to some recommendations
some Korean dramas I liked in the past. Alchemy of Souls & Bulgasal: Immortal Souls.
Others that i haven't seen yet but are meant to be good "Under the Queen's Umbrella" & "Empress Ki"
Not Korean, but thinking about Kdramas reminds me of the anime, "The Way of the Househusband" from a couple years ago. It's a cute, mindless guilty pleasure if you didn't catch it. There's a Netflix anime and a live action version I have not watched.
My girlfriend is making me watch Arcane, which I must begrudgingly say is good. Same with Yellowjackets.
In terms of new-ish shows, I've been watching The Righteous Gemstones and Severance. I've also been rewatching Xena for probably the third time. I'm looking forward to the next season of the C.B. Strike show, although I have no idea when that's supposed to drop.
Currently watching Taskmaster (UK series) on YouTube.
K-dramas I enjoyed in the past: Crash Landing On You, and Master's Sun. Master's Sun starts off with a horror vibe but it eases and gets fun.
Was Parasite a Korean drama?
I haven’t yet seen it but my daughter loved it
It was, yes. Well, a Korean movie. I quite enjoyed it myself.
