I haven't really kept up with a lot of the recent MCU releases, but I have really enjoyed a few of the shows. WandaVision and Loki were both a lot of fun I thought. So I was kind of excited about this one. (She Hulk was terrible, which sucks because a superhero court room dramedy is such an incredible genre concept that competent writers could have made amazing, but that's a rant for another day)
And overall I thought it was good. The episode with Lilia's tarot reading was just a fantastic episode. Not just for the series, but just a really solid piece of media. But I'm a sucker for disjointed storytelling where all the pieces click into place at the end.
All of the witches did a fantastic job with the roles. Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza absolutely chew up the scenery every time they are on screen and it's a delight.
The biggest flaw is, of course, Marvel being Marvel. Could we have a show with a cast of middle-age women being awesome? Well, no obviously. Because we have another franchise to set up!
Somewhere along the way, the focus shifted from it being a story about Agatha and the rag tag coven she assembled, where there happened to be this mystery kid to it being the origin story about Billy: The Young Avenger (coming soon to Disney+). Which stinks, because there was so much going for it, I thought. The ending was just a bit of a miss for me.
I didn't even dislike the character or the reveal of who he was, only when it felt like it was taking over in some kind of pseudo pilot for another series that it really dragged things down. The final scene was goofy as shit. WandaVision had a similar problem with Monica Rambeau, but much less so imo.
Then again, I was really moved by the reveal that Agatha never sold her son, and he just died. I had guessed as much, but Hahn's delivery of the line "sometimes boys die" or her telling Death that she prefers having people believe she sold her son because the truth is worse, really got to me. (And it's not lost on me it's another Marvel mother who goes on a murderous rampage because she lost her kid, but idk it worked for me in this one and I don't really have much to add to this point).
Anyway, what did you all think?
