I wish there were more cartoons especially older ones like this that focused on female experiences and fears...
Also one thing I always liked about Olive Oyl is that she is funny like the male characters and not sexualized the way Betty Boop is... Not even pretty just funny...
How many female human characters from old cartoons do you know?
I know Betty Boop, Olive Oyl, the Grandma Emma from the Looney Tunes and Penelope Pitstop... And of course some older Disney Princesses and female villains like Snow White and the Queen from the same Disney movie...
The other ones I know are animals like Minnie, Clarabelle Cow and Penelope Pussycat...
I miss the times were NOT sexualizing female characters was the default in animation...
I think the sexualization of female characters in animation trend started with Betty Boop and then went mostly dormant due to censorship... Before returning with characters like Jessica Krupnick Rabbit and Lola Bunny in the late 1980s and 1990s in the West...
And that is not counting the Anime industry in Japan... The sexualization of female characters in Japanese media can be traced to Go Nagai ( creator of Devilman among other series full of female sexualization ) it seems and today Anime is infamous for it...
Osamu Tezuka was fond of Betty Boop but he did not sexualize the female characters he created as far as I know...
Well, she was pretty sexualized, but I always loved Natasha Fatale/ Natasha Nogoodnik from the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons.("squirrel and moose")
I will forever be bitter that Genndy Tartakovski's Popeye never made it past the proof of concept stage
Pity! Been a while since there was new Popeye stuff! The old cartoons are available on Pluto TV at least though I think...
