Just watched Dolores Claiborne (1995)...

Wow, what a movie. Went in thinking I was watching an old mystery film, turned my nose up when I saw it was a Stephen King adaptation, and came way crying my eyes out.

I haven't read the novel, but I was surprised by the feminist themes and how well written the women were. Especially Vera, who starts off as what would be called a Karen today and becomes so human as you see more of her.

I also loved Kathy Bates, even more than usual. Her character's husband constantly mocks her looks and weight, and I kept thinking, even though Kathy is beautiful, she's a realistic looking person, someone I could actually see being mocked by an abusive husband in that way. I can't imagine Hollywood actually casting a woman who doesn't look like model in that role these days. They'd give her some tired makeup and a messy bun and call the plain.
