ReviewMy Brilliant Friend

Yesterday I began watching "My Brilliant Friend" on HBO. I looked for an existing thread in here but nothing came up in my search.

If you weren't a misandrist before, you will be after watching this beautifully done show. Oh. My. God.

It's set in the 1950s+ in a slightly-slummy neighborhood outside of Naples, Italy. The dialogue is in Italian with subtitles.

It is about a lifelong friendship between two young girls who grow up together in this neighborhood, and the absolutely BRUTAL PATRIARCHY and asshole men who do everything they can to keep them, and all women, "in their place." It's about the girls' generation striving to break free of the oppressive, violent culture of their parents' generation. It's about oppression based on sex and social class.

It's about doing whatever it takes to survive in a time and place where women and girls were considered good for only one thing - being wives/servants/mothers.

There are a couple of CW/TW for potential viewers - there is a WHOLE lot of domestic violence depicted, VAWG, and more than one rape scene. And that's just in the first season...

I highly recommend this show. It is SO FREAKIN GOOD.
