By that logic we shouldn't have anything that primarily exists to document crime or unfortunate events. The level of dismissiveness in this comment towards substantiated fears women have is so palpable. There is data staring them dead in the face and they have the gall to claim it "doesn't actually in itself do anything."

Surely by ignoring the problem it will somehow magically go away on its own! We are so silly to be worried. Ladies, next time you're about to become a victim of male violence, just ignore it and it will disappear! /s

It's a subreddit where people are almost self-aware about how stupid and wrong they are, but just barely miss the point.

I liked it, until it became a trans sub. I think it may have peaked me, actually.

From the subreddit's description: "Once in a blue moon redditors almost transform into self aware creatures. Almost."

The self-awarewolving in this post is that GenCyn, of all subs, says this about a different sub (specifically r/nametheproblem):

You know, having a specialized 'nothing but bad violent news' subreddit doesn't sound terribly healthy. At least 90% of the shit on this sub doesn't actually in itself do anything, it's just assholes being assholes online; every story there is someone's Worst Day Ever, and staying submerged in that cannot do good things for your state of mind.

They're not entirely wrong about about NtP. It isn't healthy to be submerged in that constantly. (Which is why we read and participate in other subs and forums, too) But lordy, GenCyn could've been holding up a mirror to their own subreddit with those same sentiments.
