How to Triumph Like a Girl

BY ADA LIMÓN

I like the lady horses best,

how they make it all look easy,

like running 40 miles per hour

is as fun as taking a nap, or grass.

I like their lady horse swagger,

after winning. Ears up, girls, ears up!

But mainly, let’s be honest, I like

that they’re ladies. As if this big

dangerous animal is also a part of me,

that somewhere inside the delicate

skin of my body, there pumps

an 8-pound female horse heart,

giant with power, heavy with blood.

Don’t you want to believe it?

Don’t you want to lift my shirt and see

the huge beating genius machine

that thinks, no, it knows,

it’s going to come in first.

from her book Bright Dead Things

Listen to her read it

She is the current US poet laureate and I love her poetry!

I've commented this before but I am absolutely petrified of someone being doxxed and their pets being killed. My background is in criminology so maybe have been overly exposed to phenomenon such as this but it terrifies me.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

Yep. I love my pets but won't be posting their names or photos of them on here anytime soon.

Yennefer_ReneeFebruary 11, 2021

Yeah I have SUPER cute pets. My dog is gorgeous. That is not just me saying that. She has very unique eyes and a very unique coat. I would LOVE to share her picture but I am afraid of getting doxxed and something happening to my babies.

Unless you're referring to someone else, that wasn't a serial killer. He's a moustrous psychopath, but at the time he was killing kittens 😑

The whole process by which these vigilantes managed to narrow down his location was quite impressive though. They examined outlets, metadata, etc.

In this case it was justified though. I think even TRAs can agree that drowning and suffocating kittens is crossing a line.

He did murder one person, a Chinese gay man named Lin Jun who he also dismembered, scattered his body parts all over the city, and even mailed some to various organisms, including leading political parties before fleeing to Europe. He also made a video of it. This happened in my city and I remember how shocking the manhunt was. Everyone was on the lookout. A friend of mine who was in the process of boarding a plane to France when the news broke recounted not understanding until she landed in Paris why her flight was delayed and every passenger was getting double checked. I'm personally still mildly traumatized. He's a profoundly sick fuck and last time I checked he was serving life at RdP, I think... and getting married there, actually.

Thing is at the time when vigilantes were trying to locate him, it was because he had been uploading one or two videos of himself torturing and killing kittens. If I remember correctly the authorities ignored them and allowed him to be let loose and not only potentially still harming animals, but being able to move to another province and eventually lure an unexpecting human who had no way to know that this guy was a serial killer in the making. "Don't mess with cats" on Netflix is about this. We knew this guy was dangerous, he had previous convictions and a history of not taking his anti psychotic medications, and yet nothing was done.

Sorry for the trivia section, I'm angry at our authorities.

I never meant to imply that TRAs would ever start killing cats either, and didn't believe that was what you said, sorry about the misunderstanding. What I meant was that, while doxxing people because you don't like their political opinions is apparently wrong according to us but not TRAs, us and them can probably agree that torturing kittens is a behavior which justifies doxxing.

Oh, don't be sorry. Remembering is healthy, even when they're nasty events.

We have a problem with our justice system. At least this guy's probably not getting out.

He was obsessed with James Dean. tons of cosmetic surgery.

wackFebruary 11, 2021

Thanks for making sure this is brought up, I've made sure the photos I upload are one's I haven't posted anywhere else and that there's no identifying info in the background, the paranoia I have for being doxxed is (as we all know) fully justified.

Mix it up with the occasional cat from https://thiscatdoesnotexist.com to throw them off! :P

MotherlySquirrelFebruary 11, 2021

Is this one of those ai sites like the thispony/fursonadoesnot exist ones?

lucreciaFebruary 11, 2021

Hah, yes, but this is the first I've heard of thispony or thisfursona! :P I think the original was thispersondoesnotexist.com .

MotherlySquirrelFebruary 11, 2021

I just found the main website, I didn't know there were all kinds of these! https://thisxdoesnotexist.com/

The furry and pony ones just happen to be popular in certain communities so they get shared a lot and they're also by the same person so I always thought it was just these 2 haha. I'm gonna have a lot of fun with these sites, they're pretty neat for inspiration.

MadSeaFebruary 11, 2021(Edited February 11, 2021)

I’ve been doxxed a couple times already, and they even have hate pages up about me, so it makes no difference to me. I’ve taken all necessary precautions to keep myself safe and they’ll have an unfortunate outcome if they ever try to harm me or my pets. I refuse to live in fear of screeching teenagers.

That said, for anyone who hasn’t been doxxed, I agree. I have no social media tied to my actual name anymore, and I don’t post any pictures of myself or my family ever. Social media is a plague on society.

Fake names, fake profiles, and not tying them together is the way to go.

My favorite is when they’re like, “You bigot, you keep your profile on private and use a fake name! You’re (whatever insult is popular that day)!” not even realizing the reason we all made new profiles and locked them down is because they are psychotic. Stay mad scrotes, you’ll never be us, and our cats make us happier than you’ll ever be. 😘

BlathersFebruary 11, 2021

Yep. While I agree with the sentiment, not all of these people are teens. Lots are grown men, and grown men are dangerous. People would lose their jobs for daring to care about women, so we shouldn't be too hard on them for not wanting to 'out' themselves.

For me it's that I have a displaced small kid living with me and I was already doxxed once for something unrelated (working on a video game, and funny enough, it was a TIM who did it) and it really scared her. It was some mouthbreathing neckbeard who couldn't and didn't do fuck all but out of respect for the kid I won't be joining in the pics either and I'm also mindful not to give too many particular details. A lot of us have good reasons.

CriminallyCriticalFebruary 11, 2021

I'm in a city where if we did any kind of women's March we'd be attacked severely.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

I'm in a city where if we did any kind of women's March we'd be attacked severely.

That's the saddest and most alarming thing I've heard in weeks really -- and the thing is: I believe you and know it's true.

CriminallyCriticalFebruary 12, 2021

Ive been planning to come out as radfem. I met up with a 70 year old outspoken radfem lesbian in my city. She told me were not having a March because of how much danger we'd be in. I live in THE OG trans wokeville.

[Deleted]February 12, 2021

Same here really... it’s seriously disheartening

I should move!

Maybe we should move?

I wonder where rad-fems would be welcome... 🤔

nemesisneeds aspirin!February 11, 2021

We need to be meticulous on what information we ourselves release. I'm fairly good at finding information of the predators harassing my friends online. Predators out themselves, they're very arrogant. Anyways. And people – primarily nowadays – basically Hansel & Gretel themselves online. They don't remove the info left in their photos, tag their locations, have visible signs of where they are, and keep old posts up.

My tips:

  • Don't release any notable info on yourself online (even if it's a small comment like “one of my brothers-” since that informs people you have multiple brothers)
  • Avoid releasing pictures. If you screenshot something on your phone, be certain to crop out the menu bar showing wifi, etc.
  • Before posting, look over it again for any slip-ups like leaving your profile image or username in.
  • Be wary of odd links from strangers. There are some I.P grabbers and knowing someone's I.P can go a long way.
  • Cover your webcam(s) with post-it notes to hide yourself. See how Mark Zuckerberg has his covered. Hell, he even has a private trash company to prevent breached privacy.
  • Virtual machines (VM) and VPNs are concrete to protect yourself. I use them because of this. Turn off your location, read over privacy settings for everything.

All in all; picture everyone online as someone trying to get your social security card.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

These are really good

Erm... what if it’s kinda too late and you’ve already sort of blown it with verbose posts, references to where you live,’ references to family members, posted pictures of cats, etc?

nemesisneeds aspirin!February 11, 2021

I would still delete it despite how long it has been online!

[Deleted]February 12, 2021

I tried to delete my post and it looks like it only deleted the original post and I can't figure out how to delete the photo. It looks like I'll have to painstakingly look through my posts for personal information. But I think we need better ways to delete photos and threads if they contain personal information and we especially need to be able to delete our own uploads!

sensusquaeramgender heathenFebruary 11, 2021

Great advice.

I'd also add -- scrub EXIF data from photos before posting. Easily done: https://photographylife.com/what-is-exif-data

girl_undoneFebruary 14, 2021(Edited February 14, 2021)

Exif data is removed automatically from Ovarit uploads. That's why so many photos are rotated incorrectly, we have to remove all exif data except rotation, apparently.

sensusquaeramgender heathenFebruary 14, 2021

That is fantastic! Thank you.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

Thanks for that info, I’d never heard of EXIF data. I was a bit thrown by the article’s references to Photoshop etc - never used them. I found there are apps one can use (all my pics are taken on a tablet or phone) to do the same thing: https://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/how-to-remove-exif-data-from-your-photos/

sensusquaeramgender heathenFebruary 11, 2021

Awesome, thanks for the link! Once you know what it's about, it is (thankfully) pretty easy to deal with.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

Yes, I just downloaded one of those apps and tried it - very simple!

Pity it’s not retrospective, imagine being able to wipe that info from everything you ever posted. 😄

SrfthrowawayFebruary 11, 2021

Thanks! Just downloaded one to my phone, this is a good project to do.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

Glad to have helped!

ladybrainhaverFebruary 11, 2021

I haven't posted any pet pics for this reason even though I really want to. TRAs are have gotten in before and it could happen again. A good rule of thumb, especially when dealing with such an insane group of people, is to be vague enough to the point where someone who personally knows you couldn't identify you based on your post/comment history. Better safe than sorry.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

TRAs are have gotten in before

They don't have to "get in" to the site to see what's posted here. It's all public, please be aware. An account is needed only to create posts and make comments.

ladybrainhaverFebruary 11, 2021

Ah, I thought certain subs were only visible if you had an account. I post like someone out there is hellbent on doxxing me and sees everything I do regardless!

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

Hmm — maybe this site shouldn’t be public for that reason?? So ovarit members are not harassed by angry TRA’s or anyone else who is mentally unbalanced?

GabbleFebruary 11, 2021

That wouldn’t really be the same, and would in any case just encourage a false sense of security. Nobody is carrying out thorough background checks on everyone who joins, and even if they did it wouldn’t be secure. Closed groups get screenshotted all the time.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021(Edited February 11, 2021)

I get it — it’s just... um... why make it easy for people who mean us harm?? — especially the hundreds of threats against “terfs” each day on social media? I mean, many of them are actual death and/or rape threats!

At what point will we at least consider maybe beefing up security? When laws change such that being gender-critical is prosecutable by law? Surely we don’t want members going to jail for expressing such benign scientific truths such as, “biological sex is real”?

It’s poor consolation to know we are innocent of the accusations who call us “terf” would have others believe. Being technically correct when we are suffering consequences that do not match the “crime” of our speaking the simple truth probably won’t be much of a comfort if a bunch of us are thrown into jail cells — if it comes to that... (I hope it doesn’t come to that... but these days - I wouldn’t be surprised!)

GabbleFebruary 12, 2021

It wouldn’t be particularly harder, if we were a closed group. They’d just need a sign-up code, and to maybe not post anything to avoid letting their true colours show.

Much better for us all to post in the full knowledge that everyone can see what we write, and make decisions accordingly.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

I agree.

Yennefer_ReneeFebruary 11, 2021

I really wish there was a safe way to find radfem groups in person tbh. So I could just bring my dog to lunch dates!!! Sigh.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

I’m using pictures I’ve just taken and not uploaded elsewhere, just in case.

EmmaGildedFebruary 11, 2021

No pet pictures for me here, I post too many elsewhere.

Yep, Metadata even when scrubbed when uploaded to Twitter or most social media still contains the time and date when the photo was taken and in which timezone it was.

Astraea1284February 11, 2021(Edited February 11, 2021)

I thought about this too. I won't use their names publicly on here because one of mine has an unusual one - I posted photos that I haven't shared publicly for this reason. (I only have one social media account with privacy settings locked down, which I know is not foolproof but I just reverse searched one of my photos to see what came up and no results.)

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

That's why I haven't posted my cats. I have an instagram page for them with quite a few followers, so there's a big chance I would be doxxing myself if I posted a picture here.

SrfthrowawayFebruary 11, 2021

I don't have any social media so that never occurred to me. Sophia doesn't have an online presence outside here.

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

We are doubly privileged to see her, then.

SrfthrowawayFebruary 11, 2021

Yes. Yes you are. 😺

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

😻

PlantMamFebruary 11, 2021

I don’t have a cat, but I do have two really big dogs one of whom genuinely seems to believe I gave birth to him and absolutely adores me.

I have no fear of TRAs on the doorstep!

Sensible advice re: photos though. Make the background unplaceable and don’t reuse the same photo elsewhere!

beingishardFebruary 11, 2021

Agreed - sadly it's why I don't dare post any photos of anything to do with me here. I also have a ridiculous amount of precautions set up for this.

sensusquaeramgender heathenFebruary 11, 2021(Edited February 11, 2021)

Adding this because I think it's so important -- if you value privacy, AVOID TIKTOK. In exploitability terms, it's far worse than Google, and it was created to hoover data. That's its sole purpose. If foolish TRAs want to put their shit out there as an exploitable commodity -- let them. Don't compromise yourself by going on that platform to challenge them. (I wouldn't even link to its content, let alone touch the app, but that's me.)

TikTok starts collecting data the minute you download the app, according to researchers. It tracks the websites you’re browsing and how you type, down to keystroke rhythms and patterns, according to the company’s privacy policies and terms of service. The app warns users it has full access to photos, videos and contact information of friends stored in the device’s address book, unless you revoke those permissions.

Even when you’re not singing and dancing around your living room, the app tracks everywhere you go using your IP address and GPS coordinates, providing the app with your precise location while working, voting, attending protests, traveling, or simply picking up milk from the grocery store. You can disable all GPS collection on your devices, but, in some cases, that would shut off access to apps that need location data to function, like Google Maps . . .

Once you use TikTok for a few days, the app has a good idea of what you look like, how you hold your phone, who your friends are, what videos you like to watch, what topics you’re interested in and what websites you visit. It reads the messages you compose and exchange on the app. TikTok can then match this data to other information collected about users from third-party services and publicly available sources.

Be safe out there!

Wow. Read this out to hubs, he was just as thrown. Do all these teenage kids on there know this? Do their parents? Yikes.

sensusquaeramgender heathenFebruary 11, 2021(Edited February 11, 2021)

I don't know whether they don't know, or don't care, or wouldn't care if they knew . . . which is scary to think about. With internet permanency and the site's general resistance to U.S. FCC regs, it's a problem.

(grammar edit)

FeministunderyrbedFebruary 11, 2021

That’s why I haven’t posted my boy yet. I’ve got to take a new photo, post it and then delete so I won’t share it anywhere else (his coat is undoxable I’m pretty sure).

[Deleted]February 11, 2021

This is why I didn’t want to contribute. I was too afraid someone would recognize my pets.

bumpyjerboaFebruary 11, 2021

THANK YOU. I didn't want to say this because it was such a warm and fun activity but it's not even just reverse image search. Some of us have the most lovely and unique kitties and there are probably TRA stalkers that could make the connection.

frankincenseFebruary 11, 2021

This is why I haven't posted my cat, she a calico and has very distinct markings.

crispycherrypieFebruary 11, 2021

I’d also strongly recommend stripping the metadata of any photographs you upload. Photos taken with smart phones can give exact gps coordinates.

It’s even easier to track you than you think.

JooskeRunneboomFebruary 11, 2021

This was my first thought when I saw all the pet pics, and why I have t posted any

delicate_silicateFebruary 12, 2021

I own a very unique and exotic pet that is pretty much one of a kind. It would identify me right away. You're just going to have use your imagination! She is very cute though.
