If you want apocalyptic settings there's Parable of the Sower by Octavia E Butler. There is a sequel Parable of the Talents which is not as good (Sower got lots of awards) but not bad.

OMG that rich boy is insufferable. In the same book, I remember there was a chapter covering Ukraine. The character retelling how they were fleeing while over looked by the majestic monument of "Motherland". And I, as someone from Eastern Europe, am like - motherland?! That's some soviet sounding shit. So I look up the monument - and it literally has the soviet hammer and sickle on it. Basically, it's like saying a jewish person would look longingly at a swastika - it's completely offensive and bizarre choice.
So I look up what backlash the rich boy got for this, and turns out Ukrainian portrayal wasn't even in top ten. And his response was: > "Yes, in World War Z some nations come out as winners and some as losers, but isn't that the case in real life as well? I wanted to base my stories on the historical actions of the countries in question, and if it offends some individuals, then maybe they should reexamine their own nation's history."
Not saying everyone needs to know every country's history, but maybe don't write about shit you know nothing about? His mommy and daddy must have paid big bucks to get him a degree in history and unfortunately that made him believe he is actually educated.
All in all, I strongly believe this trash wouldn't have been picked up by a publisher if not for nepotism and I strongly question the intelligence of the person who gave it to me.

Y The Last Man had similar problems. The male author wrote a story where 99% of all males die from a plague. And the way the female cast was written was ridiculous. Like, most of the time the story was decent and compelling. And then you get slapped in the face with a "Crazy Feminazi Biker Gang" that is still obsessed with hating on males (and killing any woman who still misses her dad/husband/son/etc) despite nearly all of the males being dead. And also sex trafficking still existing in an all female world???

Maybe I should write a novel where the whole novel is framed as a mystery as to why men died out then plot twist it's revealed smart women engineered a plague to make earth peaceful again 💀

I know right! First off, heterosexual women wouldn't be satisfied with banging women in man costumes. And lesbians wouldn't buy slaves because, in a world where men are all gone, they'd be more spoiled for choice than ever before!
Even if a reader was dumb enough to believe that sex trafficking wouldn't IMMEDIATELY stop if all the men died, it still makes no logical sense!
The recent attempt to turn Y The Last Man into a TV show actually made some promising changes to fix the sexist nonsense that was in the books. However, it sadly shit the bed by trying to shoe-horn genderwoo into the story and having a bunch of TIFs running around. Which was ridiculous because the major conflict in that story was trying to keep The Last Man a secret while transporting him across the country to find a cure for the plague. But that kinda goes out the window if he can just tell people he's a trans-man and stroll about wherever he pleases. LOL
I thought it was stupid that women were simping over the TIFs and asking them if they were out of T. And, oh my, would you like me to use my contacts to get you some? Like, half the pop drops dead and there's some chaos. You're still going to humor trans? The plague specifically killed XYs.

And all those TIFs whining about their T and being misgendered during a literal apocalypse! At least the show accurately captured the narcissism and lack of priorities that trans people have! 🤣

The worst was the scene where Dr Mann was weeping that the Y chromosome plague killed "some of the best women in the science department".
I was a little sad the show died so early because it would have been a fun train wreck to observe. They made some legitimately positive changes to correct sexist nonsense from the original books (and I'm curious to know how those changes would impact later parts of the story). And I was dying to see if my theory that they'd have some TIMs survive via the power of their Girl Souls would come true. 🤣

I read it too. And yes, agree. I thought the so-called Amazons who cut off one of their breasts silly.....some people act like that was historically accurate. They say, Amazons cut off one of their breasts so they could pull an arrow. Um, Dolly Parton could pull an arrow...your arm goes above your shoulder. But yeah, the biker gang was stupid, the TIF prostitutes were dumb, and the women going apeshit because people were mourning some men, like David Bowie. I didn't hate it. But... The show...omg, no. They had to make it trans friendly.

I had a conversation with one of my friends who is a writer and he and I were discussing the terrible female characters men usually write. My advice to him on how to avoid that pitfall was to write a good character and then just make it a female. Unfortunately, I think that is rarely the approach male authors have.
