I find I don't really like bikinis or the more feminine design of swimwear. There's also just nothing more uncomfortable than wearing a t-shirt for swimming. I like "boy shorts".
There seems to be unitard-esq options that are okay but a lot of them for whatever reason have this huge hole designed in the back which I sort of hate.
Just curious what everyone else feels most comfortable in.
I like the sports like swimwear that is a one piece but the lower part is longer and more like biker shorts. Those kinda also don't stretch much so they push in your shape a bit and de-emphesizes breasts. I just find them comfortable, but they are a bit more expensive.
I wear a rash guard over a swimsuit with trunks! I have a sun allergy, so the long sleeves help.
When I was getting back into swimming, and uncomfortable with my body, and also not prepared to shave, I got a suit that was like a shorty wetsuit but made out of swimming costume material. It zipped up the front, and had removable pads over the breasts. It went partway down my upper arms and nearly to my knees. It felt like my armour against the world! A random Amazon purchase.
Now I’m more comfortable, I wear a Speedo suit with legs. It has the cutaway back you don’t like, but that’s good for swimming. If I’m lounging instead, I’ll add a rashguard top.
I was thinking of buying from Waterlust or Blue Adaptation next time I'm in the market for swimwear. Both of them donate a percentage to marine science and conservation programs too. The patterns are based on sea life.
surfer-style swimwear. Board shorts and whatever you'd like on top-- a swim top that's cut like a sports bra, a tankini top, maybe a sports bra/regular bikini top under a rash guard?
I was more of a tomboy growing up. I really liked tankini style swimsuits. I personally prefer two piece suits, and you can be as covered as you like since there is a lot of styles. I always preferred boy shorts bottoms.
Swim dress. Stylistically looks very similar to a normal little short sun dress. I'd pretty much feel covered enough to wear it to the grocery store. Most of them come with shorts built in with the dress/skirt part hanging over the shorts for additional coverage/loose layer to cover the shape of the ass. Mine also has a fairly high neckline.
Same here, I usually wear a 'one-piece swimsuit' that comes with a short.
I wear trunks and a rash guard usually. I have a long-sleeved one that's nice in the summer because it's sun-protective. I've also just worn women's swim shorts (kind of a boyshort cut) and a sports bra before, but I'm very flat chested so I don't need too much coverage or support.
I just wear swim trunks and a sports bra. If I’m around men, I’ll add a shirt.
I wear board shorts or swim trunks for the bottom. The top is more complicated and I have yet to find a really good solution. Some combo of a sports bra and tank top style rash guard or similar is what I usually go with.
Probably not gonna be popular here, but I've experimented with a few compressive-but-not-quite-binder swim tops from various "inclusive" swim brands, and to be honest, I don't hate them. I wish I could make them just slightly different but they actually did a great job of making me feel like my boobs were in place, supported, and out of the way. I'm quite large-breasted and most swimwear leaves me feeling floppy and all over the place, and also incredibly on display. And I really like the idea of swimwear that is built more like a sports bra, but with the coverage of a tank top.
I asked for suggestions last year here too

I was inspired to search again and found this website
I wear a bikini top with shorts like these (sorry, I see they aren’t sold anymore but it’s what I have! Amazon link) https://a.co/d/hJ3yRtH
I don’t shave, so I definitely don’t want a bikini on the bottom. But I don’t like the feeling of swimsuit on my stomach or it clinging to my thighs. I like the length of these and the loose fit :)
I love Geode Swimwear. It's not exactly "butch/tomboy" but I feel like it's got a lot of coverage and there are pieces that are basically just shorts and a tank top. https://geodeswimwear.com/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwq86wBhDiARIsAJhuphmH32SpCMjlxTWHMMYX6HfyWVraySjHdEhuKVPliDATvwds7wtPf5MaAvIGEALw_wcB
Running shorts with the built-in mesh briefs, and a sports bra. Possibly even a tank top. But in europe I swim naked more often than not
I wear swim trunks and a Swimmee top that I bought from Outplay before they went all in on the trans stuff.
I spent years wearing a rash guard but I eventually got sick of it. The Swimmee was a compromise since I couldn't bring myself to buy a regular women's swim top.
Man Outplay used to be really great, I use some of their swimwear too!
I looked them up just now. Apparently they went out of business. But their stuff was good quality. I've had my top for several years, and it's still in perfect shape.
I wear boys’ swim trunks and a baggy T-shirt.
Mini skirt for more coverage overtop of bikini swim bottoms + a regular shirt
Mens/boys swim trunks + sports bra
Or just whatever you're comfy in!
Lands End has (at least had last year when I purchased) some great options, including quick dry swim shorts that are like running shorts; skin tight mid thigh bicycle-style swim shorts; and sports bra-like tops with a racer back and high coverage. I love it for active water sports. Husband didn't (yes, I bought something skimpy for lounging too haha), but it was the best I'd felt in swimwear in years.
I wear swim shorts and a bikini top. I want to but a different top though - the one that looks like a sports bra. In theory I could just but a sports bar, but I want it to be made if thinner material.
I wear bikini bottoms covered by shorts. I don't know if they have a name but those shorts made with a plasticky but not uncomfortable material. They allow me to move as much as I want without showing anything I don't want to show, and I don't notice them while swimming.
I have very small boobs and live in Spain so just low leg bikini bottoms. Bikini top for in a pool but no one seems to care if you take it off to dry.
Would you like something like this? Apparently it's called a swim romper or romper swimsuit. That particular one doesn't have a hole in the back.
Are you specifically wanting one-piece swimsuits, or is a two-piece swimsuit that covers your midsection okay, like a tankini instead of a regular bikini? What amount of coverage in different areas do you want?
Regular t shirts are bad to wear in the pool or ocean because the material isn't right for being in the water, but you can get rashguards which are made from material that's meant to be worn while wet. They can have long or short sleeves.
If you have smaller hips you might be able to wear men's swim trunks but not every woman can do that, it just depends on your body shape. Otherwise you might be able to find swim shorts made for women but those aren't as common and tend to have shorter inseams than what's available for men.
Tomboy here. I usually like running shorts or thicker nylon shorts that look like the kind boxers wear (not the thin satin) and as modest a swim top as possible in coordinating colors. I wear it with a white straw hat that has birds hand painted in my favorite bright colors. I get a lot of compliments for my coordinating bright colors, and I have no fear of a wardrobe malfunction.
Tomboy, but I have been wearing the JCrew deep plunge ruched one-piece for about 20 years now. (I’ve repurchased and had several colors.) I’m small breasted so the plunge is not a big deal. It’s a traditional swimsuit leg, but not high cut and has good butt coverage. The straps are not skinny and useless and it frees your shoulders. Also, I am long-waisted and it comes in a long size. The ruching camouflages the tummy region, if that’s an area where you’re a little poofy. (I’ve had three kids and am no longer even remotely young, so I’m a little poochy.)
I cannot vouch for these, but I want to try them, just don’t yet need a new swimsuit. I like the classic that looks like it came from the 1920’s with the striping.
My goal has been to make my own vintage 1920s style swimsuit but more Joan Crawford Monica beach style that look like shorts and a scoop neck tank top. https://www.vintag.es/2021/06/dorothy-sebastian-joan-crawford.html
For real, where can I get me a suit like that?
Searching "swim romper" seems to bring up swimsuits in a similar style, like this one. No idea if that website is any good, it's just to show an example
I wear bikini shorts and a short sleeved rashie. I used to wear boardies and a tankini top, but then lived for a long time where shorts are banned from public pools.
Shorts are banned from public pools? What do men wear?
I use board shorts, sometimes with a pair of tighter fitting ones underneath to prevent chafing, a rash guard and usually a sports bra underneath, since most don't come with a non-bikini or padded area.
