I love a good cult documentary or podcast and I've come across one that I've been binging on recently. It The Cult I left Behind (Spotify link with Amanda Briggs. She grew up in the IBLP cult. (of the Duggar family/quiverfull infamy). Some of the episodes deal with some heavy topics (CSA among them) but on the other hand, she has mentioned loving Harry Potter 3 or 4 times so far but not once qualified that with an anti-JKR statement, and she is anti-porn and prostitution from a pro-female position (neither are really major episode topics as of 26 episodes in, but it is refreshing).
I thought I would recommend it. And if anyone has other cult documentary or podcast suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
I’ve enjoyed that podcast too :) I was thrilled when she mentioned her anti-porn stance. I do feel it’s gotten a bit boring now in further episodes though. Also, I don’t think her husband has anything insightful to add and he kind of dragged it down for me. I mean, nothing he said offended me at least, it just felt like wasted time. Even his questions were very surface level.
Yeah, he doesn't bring much. I imagine though that it's easier to have an actual human to talk to rather than talking to a mic ( I'd feel awkward anyways) and a spouse would be the easy choice in terms of coordination.
Yeah, that’s probably true. Maybe I need to reframe my thinking so I don’t get so annoyed by him 😅 I’m sure it’s easier for her to do it with somebody who cares about her.
Thank you! I'm really interested in the topic of cults, because of how they are so relevant to human nature and vulnerabilities, and your words are very encouraging. I'll most likely be into this :)
Have you seen Massacre of the Mormons? It's on Max.
Also Mormon Stories podcast if you haven't heard of it.
Those sound interesting. I'll check them out.
